In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people in many countries can visit supermarkets and purchase food produced in different parts of the world. This provides consumers with greater choice and allows them to enjoy products that are not available locally. I strongly believe that this is a positive development because it is convenient for consumers and benefits producing countries economically.
One important advantage of international food trade is that it gives people access to a wider variety of products. Modern lifestyles are often busy, so consumers prefer to find the food they want easily rather than wait for a particular season or travel to another country. For example, mangoes cannot be grown commercially in Estonia because of its cold climate. However, people living there can still enjoy fresh mangoes because supermarkets import them from warmer countries. Therefore, international food trade allows consumers to enjoy different foods throughout the year.
Another benefit is that selling food to other countries can contribute to economic growth. When countries export their agricultural products, local farmers and businesses can earn more money and create additional employment opportunities. In addition, international trade can strengthen relationships between countries because they become economically connected through regular exchanges of goods. For instance, a country that exports fruits and vegetables to several foreign markets can increase its agricultural income while developing stronger trading relationships with those countries.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the availability of food from around the world is a positive development. It provides consumers with greater choice and convenience, while also supporting economic growth and international trade.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development and supporting this with well-developed ideas. The writer presents two main arguments: consumer convenience and access to wider choice, and economic benefits for producing countries. Each body paragraph introduces a distinct supporting point that is extended with relevant examples, such as the importation of mangoes into Estonia. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, including the introduction and conclusion. The response meets all requirements of the prompt effectively without any major omissions, demonstrating a solid understanding of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged coherently, starting with a clear introductory thesis statement, followed by distinct body paragraphs focusing on separate themes, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'However', 'Therefore', and 'In addition' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically, with each paragraph focusing on a single central topic. While referencing and substitution are functional rather than sophisticated, the overall structural flow is smooth and supports the clear communication of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision. Terms such as 'international food trade', 'agricultural products', 'employment opportunities', and 'economically connected' show an ability to use less common lexical items related to the topic with a good awareness of collocation and style. Word choice is generally appropriate and precise, as seen in phrases like 'greater choice' and 'commercial production'. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is not consistently sophisticated enough to reach Band 8, it comfortably satisfies the descriptors for Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response exhibits a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, yielding frequent error-free constructions. Examples of complex sentences include 'Modern lifestyles are often busy, so consumers prefer to find the food they want easily rather than wait for a particular season...' and 'When countries export their agricultural products, local farmers and businesses can earn more money...'. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong, with accurate use of tense, subordination, and article usage. Errors are virtually absent, demonstrating a high level of accuracy that approaches Band 8, though the range of complex syntactic structures is somewhat standard.
