Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of global food availability in supermarkets. The writer presents a clear position, stating that there are various advantages while also acknowledging drawbacks. Key ideas such as consumer choice, non-seasonal availability, and competition are introduced in the body paragraphs, alongside drawbacks like carbon emissions and the impact on street vendors. However, many of these ideas are under-developed and lack extension with concrete examples or fully realised explanations, keeping the response at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level. Because the response successfully meets the minimum length requirement, it avoids any penalty for being under-length, but the depth of argument remains somewhat basic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a recognizable overall arrangement with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the transitions and cohesive devices used are sometimes mechanical or formulaic, such as 'To commence with', 'To clarify it more', and 'Beside this'. While the logical progression of ideas is discernible, referencing and linking are occasionally faulty, as seen in awkward transitional phrases like 'To regard this'. Cohesion within sentences can be repetitive, leading to a somewhat disjointed flow that prevents the writing from achieving a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, touching upon relevant concepts like 'non-seasonable food', 'carbon emission', and 'competition'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'consumer go to supermarket' (missing plural/article), 'seasonable food' instead of 'seasonal', 'drawsbacks', and 'poor people which selling'. Less common lexical items are attempted with occasional inaccuracy, which places the vocabulary performance firmly within Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('consumer go', 'people which selling'), article usage ('in supermarket', 'in another countries'), and prepositional phrases. Complex structures are often faulty, as demonstrated in sentences like 'due to many reason which will be outlined in upcoming paragraphs with logical conclusion.' Despite these frequent errors, the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, aligning with the criteria for Band 5.0.
