Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely accept that, in the recent times supermarket offers variety of food products from around the globe. In my opinion, I find this to be both positive as well as negative developments.

To begin with, One major advantage is that, people can access wide range of food products compared to the past. Due to globalization, supermarkets can imports fruits, vegetables, spices and other products that may not available locally because of climate issues. For example, people living in colder regions can purchase tropical fruits such as mangoes and pineapples throughout the year. In addition, cusomers can experience different cuisines of variety of cultures without having to travel abroad. As a result, it can increase encourage people's awarness of other countries and also cultural exchange among different nations.

Although, importing food from distinct countries can also have several drawbacks. One major concern is that, transporting food over long-distances can increase crbon emissions, which may contribute environmental problems. Another reason is that, the availability of cheap imported food may create difficulties for local farmers and food producers as they have to compete with international suppliers. For instance, if imported vegetables are sold at a relatively lower prices, local farmers may lose customers and experience financial problems.

In conclusion, although the global availability of food can have negative effect on environment and put a lot of pressure on local farmers, I believe that it is generally a positive development. The greater variety of food and opportunities for cultural exchange provide significant benefits to tremendous consumer, provided that countries also support local producers and promote more environmentally friendly methods of food transportation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of global food availability in supermarkets and clearly states the author's overall position ('I find this to be both positive as well as negative developments' and concluding that it is 'generally a positive development'). Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the availability of tropical fruits in colder regions and the challenges faced by local farmers when competing with cheap imports. While some arguments are slightly general, the overall task is successfully covered, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile. The descriptors for Band 7 are met as all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and a conclusion. Progression is generally clear throughout the text. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion'. However, paragraphing and referencing occasionally reveal some mechanical usage, and transitions like 'Although, importing food from distinct countries...' disrupt the flow slightly due to punctuation and grammatical awkwardness. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but minor cohesion slips place this firmly in the Band 6 to 7 range. The clear logical progression and adequate use of cohesive devices support a solid Band 6.5, rounded to a 6.0 due to mechanical links and punctuation flaws.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including topic-specific terms such as 'globalization', 'international suppliers', 'carbon emissions', and 'cultural exchange'. There are, however, several word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'accept' instead of accepted, 'imports' instead of import, 'cusomers' (customers), 'crbon' (carbon), and 'tremendous consumer' (which is awkward collocation). Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning and communication is not impeded. These traits reflect the Band 6 descriptor where an adequate range is attempted, but noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies persist.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and conditional forms, such as '...if imported vegetables are sold at a relatively lower prices, local farmers may lose customers...' However, there are frequent grammatical errors in simple and complex sentences alike. Examples include 'It is widely accept that', 'supermarket offers', 'variety of food products' lacking necessary articles, 'that may not available locally', 'may not available', and pluralization/agreement issues like 'lower prices' versus 'a... lower prices'. Punctuation errors also occur, such as unnecessary commas after introductory phrases where they break clause structures ('To begin with, One major advantage is that, people can access...'). This blend of complex structures mixed with persistent grammatical inaccuracies aligns closely with the Band 6 criteria.
