IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Currently in numerous countries, people can visit a supermarket and purchase food items that are globally produced. I belive this is a positive development because it has increased the convinence for consumers and decreased the purchase cost of items.

When several types of food items which are produced locally or internationally are available in supermarkets of a country, it helps people to have a diverse variety of food products to choose from before making a purchase. Consequently, the people can find their favourite brand and buy their desired item anytime they want. For instance, in the current era of social media, people love to share the photographs or vedios of their favorite meals with each other on the internet. When people from other countries watch their posts, they may crave for the same food. This is why the accessibility and convinence of several international products at ones' home country help them try a new food of another nation without much hassle.

The availability of international brands in local superstores also help people to buy different global brand items at a cheaper price. One of the main reasons is that people may have to source the item directly from another country and pay higher delivery charges. But the availability of items in local supermarkets help them to just directly go to any nearby store and buy it. For example, different korean ramens were earlier used to be imported in a small number so people had to pay a higher price to purchase them but now they have been very common and available locally at many grocery stores so people can buy them even at a cheaper price.

In conclusion, from my perspective, the availability of globally produced items in supermarkets has proved as a positive development as it has made convinenet for people to buy their desired food items at a cheaper price.

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating less common terms such as 'globally produced', 'diverse variety', and 'accessibility'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors that detract from precision, such as 'belive' instead of 'believe', 'convinence' and 'convinenet' instead of 'convenience' and 'convenient', as well as awkward collocations like 'vedios' and 'help them to just directly go'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'When several types of food items which are produced locally...'). There are, however, several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('superstores also help') and persistent spelling mistakes.
