Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, there is a huge enhancement in the supermarkets. Many individuals argue that in many nations, hypermarket are expanding because customers start buying eatable products through it, which is made in each and every part of world. In my opinion, this has both positive and negative aspects. While it is more convenient that makes it a positive development, it also results in negative development because it cause neglecting of traditional foods.

On the one hand, supermarkets can be seen as a positive development. Firstly, malls are more convenient for local people for buying eatable products. Residents can easily access to large number of food items. Moreover, items are cheap compare to the other shops. Secondly, people have the opportunities to taste various types of famous food present in all over the world. Common individuals come across different types of products and species, which helps to make make a yummy foriegn dish.

On the other hand, there are several consequences of this tend. The major concern is about the local shops. Common grocery stores cannot complete with supermarkets because of less resources available to them. In addition, they can results in low income of stalls owner and hence results in closing of the shops. Furthermore, supermarkets can promote foriegn food, which results in neglecting of traditional food. Many youngsters wants to follow the modern dishes, which is imported from the other nations. For instance, traditional species are more spicy but nowadays youngsters wants to eat less spicy food bacause of foreign preferences.

In conclusion, although supermarkets are convenient and explore foriegn food items, it also creates challenges such as downfall of local shops and neglect traditional food. Therefore, I would consider this trend to be both positive and negative development according to the person.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of having globally produced food available in supermarkets, presenting a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines both sides, and body paragraphs explore convenience and variety alongside the negative impacts on local grocery stores and traditional food. Ideas are relevant, but some are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the discussion on youngsters wanting less spicy food. However, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, placing this performance at a solid Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression through distinct paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts between ideas, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen with phrases like 'of this tend' and abrupt transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate different facets of the argument, but overall mechanical errors in linking pull the score to Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including words like 'enhancement', 'convenient', and 'consequences'. However, there are frequent word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'buy eatable products through it', 'cause neglecting of traditional foods', and 'less resources'. Spelling errors like 'foriegn' also occur. While communication is not severely impeded, these noticeable inaccuracies limit the lexical score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures often contain grammatical errors. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('hypermarket are expanding', 'youngsters wants'), tense misuse ('customers start buying', 'can results'), and prepositional errors ('access to large number'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent grammatical slips throughout the text indicate a Band 5.0 level of grammatical accuracy.
