IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Recently, customers can now walk into shopping centers to purchase food produced across the nation. While this trend has some downsides, I strongly believe that this is a positive development.

One major disadvantage of having a variety of food items made from different nations is the inability to vet their quality. Lacking the right information about how certain crops and raw materials are processed, and having no idea of the particular company responsible for producing certain items, will lead to low confidence in that product. For instance, a Ghanaian customer can see a Nigerian food sold at an affordable price, but because he is unsure of its authenticity, he will be reluctant to purchase it.

However, being able to shop for imported food produce from a walk-in store remains a positive development with predominant upsides. Firstly, a country can benefit from complementing its foodstuff with those produced by other countries. There are a limited number of food items cultivated in each country. Therefore, it is impossible to have all the food supplies available. For example, in my country, Nigeria, the raw materials needed for making bean cake – commonly known as moi-moi, are not produced. Therefore, we are fortunate to import the major plant protein, which is beans.

Secondly, machines which are used in processing some farm produce into their final result tend to be highly limited. Equipment such as the refinery machines, which Nigeria doesn’t have, but which are available in specific countries, can be used to process root tubers like cassava, reforming it into garri, fu-fu, or abacha.

In conclusion, although purchasing food produced all over the world may lead to contemplations regarding quality, I still consider it to be a positive development because of the greater significant benefits it offers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the potential downsides and the clear benefits of global food availability, establishing a strong and consistent position from the outset. Ideas are generally well developed; for example, the explanation regarding complementing national food supplies with imported items is supported by a clear, relevant example involving beans in Nigeria. However, the discussion of processing machinery in the fourth paragraph slightly drifts into a technical angle rather than focusing directly on the consumer food availability aspect, representing a minor limitation in task focus. Overall, the ideas presented are relevant and directly address the prompt, aligning well with the expectations for a Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction and a concession paragraph to two supporting points and a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'While this trend', 'One major disadvantage', 'However', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring that each main idea is contained in its own logical section. While referencing is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall logical flow easily meets the criteria for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'predominant upsides', 'authenticity', 'complementing', and 'cultivated'. There are some less common lexical items used with awareness of style and collocation, such as 'raw materials' and 'root tubers'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies or slightly unnatural phrases, such as 'food items made from different nations' instead of 'from different countries' and 'refinery machines' instead of 'processing machinery'. These minor errors do not impede communication, and spelling is generally accurate, placing the lexical control firmly at Band 6.5, which rounds to 6.5 or is a solid Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over subordination and relative clauses, such as in the sentence 'Lacking the right information about how certain crops and raw materials are processed... will lead to low confidence.' Punctuation is generally handled well, and there are many error-free sentences throughout the text. Some minor slips occur, such as 'food produced across the nation' in the opening sentence (which contradicts the global scale of the prompt, though likely a vocabulary slip rather than a structural grammar error). The majority of sentences are grammatically sound, supporting a solid Band 7 rating for grammatical range and accuracy.
