IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Nowadays, supermarkets in many countries offer food products that are produced in different parts of the world. I believe this is a positive development because it gives consumers greater choice and promotes international trade and cultural exchange.

One major benefit of this trend is that consumers have access to a much wider variety of food. In the past, people largely depended on products that were available locally, whereas modern supermarkets allow them to purchase items from countries with very different cuisines and agricultural conditions. This gives consumers greater freedom to choose what they eat and enables them to experience new flavours without travelling abroad. For example, a customer in Pakistan can easily buy Italian pasta, Korean noodles or Turkish sweets from a large supermarket. Therefore, the international availability of food can make everyday life more convenient and enjoyable.

Another significant advantage is that the global food market can strengthen economic and cultural connections between countries. When supermarkets import food from abroad, producers gain access to new markets and consumers become familiar with products associated with other cultures. This can increase international trade while also encouraging people to learn about different traditions and lifestyles. For instance, the growing popularity of Japanese sushi and Korean food in countries outside Asia has made these cuisines more widely known and appreciated. In this way, the movement of food across borders can contribute to both economic cooperation and cultural exchange.

In conclusion, I consider the increasing availability of food from around the world to be a positive development. It provides consumers with greater choice and convenience while also supporting international trade and encouraging cultural exchange.
