Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative developments of consuming globally produced food, fulfilling the core task requirements. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The introduction simply restates the prompt multiple times using run-on structures, and the body paragraphs rely on generic arguments without deep elaboration or concrete examples. For instance, the discussion on local farmers facing losses is briefly stated without exploring broader economic or cultural implications. The position is somewhat clear, but the overall lack of fully extended ideas places this performance in the Band 5 range, as the response addresses the task only partially and lacks depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text demonstrates some organisation with basic paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, there is a distinct lack of clear progression and logical flow, driven primarily by severe punctuation and sentence-boundary issues. The entire first body paragraph, for example, consists of a single massive, rambling sentence stitched together by commas and repetitive transitional phrases like 'likewise', 'further more', and 'besides'. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly and repetitively, and referencing is often unclear. There is no clear overall progression of argument, which is characteristic of the Band 4 level of coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily relies on words directly lifted from the prompt, such as 'supermarket', 'food produced all over the world', and 'consumers'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the essay, including 'acces' instead of access, 'sufficiant' instead of sufficient, 'negetive' instead of negative, and 'lose' instead of loss. These errors and the limited range of vocabulary cause some difficulty for the reader and indicate a minimally adequate range that struggles to convey precise meaning, firmly aligning with Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical structure of the essay is severely impaired by a lack of proper punctuation, resulting in prolonged run-on sentences. The response lacks control over complex sentence forms, relying on endless coordination and clauses joined incorrectly by commas rather than full stops or appropriate subordinating conjunctions. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, word formation, and punctuation that cause significant difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning. Although simple structures occasionally appear, the high frequency of serious grammatical errors means the response falls below the Band 5 threshold, meriting a Band 4.
