Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, consumers in the supermarkets can have food produced all over the world in several countries. I strongly believe that this development can impact positively, despite having a few negative sides that are solvable.

The advantages of having various food items in a supermarket which are produced all over the world are many. Individuals can acquire knowledge about the variety of food industry in different regions of the world. Organic food items reveal the various climates of the earth surface where these are grown, while manufacturing food items provide the information about the technology of food various industries. Thus, global market and food businesses grow gradually what causes the economy to boost.

Nevertheless, some disadvantages are evident due to this development, such as local resources becomes insufficient when they are exported excessively. Consequently, the price of necessary local products can rise substantially. For example, in Bangladesh, Hilsha is the national and most popular fish among the regional people but nowadays, the supply of the fish in Bangladesh is failing to meet the minimum demand of the regional people due to extensive exportation. As a result the price of Hilsha soared so high that it goes beyond the affordable limit of the general public. However, exporting local food items bring a lot of foreign currency which boosts a country's economy.

In conclusion, it is undeniable that imported food items in supermarket can cost high, but it boosts a country's economy. Therefore, having various regional foods together in a supermarket is a positive development, and it outweighs all the disadvantages it creates.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of global food availability in supermarkets and clearly states a position that it is a positive development. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the discussion of Hilsha fish in Bangladesh to illustrate the strain on local resources. However, some arguments, such as consumers acquiring knowledge of climates through organic foods, are slightly under-developed or less convincing. Overall, the task is well addressed, earning a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response features a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "Nevertheless", "Consequently", and "In conclusion". However, some referencing and transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as "what causes the economy to boost" and "consumers in the supermarkets can have food produced all over the world in several countries". Paragraphing is handled appropriately, resulting in a solid Band 6.5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "extensive exportation", "foreign currency", and "affordable limit". There are, however, several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as "impact positively" instead of "have a positive impact", "earth surface", and "cost high" instead of "be expensive". Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical errors prevent the score from reaching a higher band. This represents a solid Band 6.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("local resources becomes"), awkward phrasing ("goes beyond the affordable limit"), and missing prepositions or articles ("As a result the price"). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded and complex structures are attempted with varying degrees of success, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
