In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, consumers can go to a supermarket and purchase food produced all over the world. I believe this is a positive trend because it not only improves individual well-being but also stimulates economic growth in several countries.

A particularly noteworthy advantage of accessing food produced from all over the world in a supermarket is its potential to improve individual well-being. This can be largely be attributed to the fact that consumers are able to purchase different types of food, which may have several nutritional values. Thereby enabling people to acquire significant nutrients required by their bodies.In practical terms, each food-type has a unique nutritional value, which can bring about substantial benefits to an individual when consumed. This can be exemplified by a Kiwi fruit that is not cultivated in most parts of Africa, but is imported from European countries. The fruit is rich in vitamin B12, which is limited in most fruits produced in Africa. As a consequence, people can get different food-types, which may contribute a better health.

Another compelling benefit stems from the extent to which availability of food from all parts of the world can stimulate economic growth. This is particularly significant because countries can export their produce all over the world. This allows countries to get revenues, which can subsequently lead to a better economy. For instance, when Kenya exports Tea to Europe, they get more money, which can chennel down to the citizens who are cultivating the crops. Ultimately, this can foster economic growth and enhance quality of life.

To conclude, although in many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world, I strongly believe it is a positive trend because it not only improves individual well-being but also stimulates economic growth in several countries.
