Student answer (Band 5.0)

Purchasing food has become a major concern in today's fast-paced society. In many countries, customers mostly buy their food from local markets near their homes. From my perspective, this is a positive development because it can reduce their travel expenses and allow them to choose food according to their preferences.

The primary reason why it is a positive development is that buying food from local market help citizens to reduce their travel expenses. For example people do not need to travel long distance for buying food , Such as fruits and other necessities of their daily life. Firstly it will save their significant time ,secondly this will help them to save their fuel expenses that they can later spend on anyother facilities like healthacare , education .

The Secondary reason for positive development is that local markets have a variety of foods and people can choose the food of their own choice. For example some local market have fresh fruits and vegetables and people found it easier to choose fresh fruits and vegetables of their own perefernce based on their dietry requirements and budgets.Another reason for buying food from local market is that mostly local sellers offer a moderate price which people from different financial background can easily afford that is why most people choose to buy foods and daily necessities of their life from supermarket.

In conculsion buying food from supermarket allow people to choose between varities of food and help them to reduce travel cost , hence it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that buying from local markets/supermarkets is a positive development, offering reasons such as reduced travel expenses and variety. However, there is a notable contradiction in the student's premise: the prompt discusses buying food produced all over the world at a supermarket, whereas the student's essay primarily discusses buying locally to save travel costs. Furthermore, the final sentence of the body paragraph introduces supermarkets again, creating confusion about whether the writer is discussing local markets or global supermarkets. Ideas are supported with examples, but the logical development is somewhat undermined by this confusion over the core topic. This places the response in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, leaning towards a 5.0 due to the misinterpretation of the central theme.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at logical paragraphing. However, cohesion within sentences and paragraphs is frequently faulty. There are mechanical transitional phrases ('Firstly', 'secondly') followed by punctuation errors like missing spaces and comma splices, as seen in 'For example people do not need to travel long distance for buying food , Such as fruits'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally unclear, particularly as the student shifts abruptly between local markets and supermarkets. Paragraphing is present, but overall cohesion is mechanical and sometimes inadequate, aligning best with the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, but it is repetitive and limited ('fresh fruits and vegetables', 'buy food', 'positive development'). There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'distance' instead of distances, 'dietry' instead of dietary, and 'perefernce' instead of preference. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'necessities' and 'financial background', but errors in collocation and spelling ('conculsion') cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the score from reaching a higher band. This represents a solid Band 5.0 performance for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical inaccuracies. Punctuation control is weak, characterized by missing spaces after commas, unspaced commas, and run-on sentences like '...financial background can easily afford that is why most people choose...'. Subject-verb agreement errors also occur, such as 'local market help citizens'. While meaning is generally recoverable, frequent errors in punctuation, articles, and clause structures place this text firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
