In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Purchasing food has become a major concern in today's fast-paced society. In many countries customers mostly visit supermarkets and buy food available globally.I think it is a positive development because it allows consumers to choose food of their own choice and also provides them access to different varieties of food that are only available in international markets.

The primary benefit of purchasing food from supermarkets is that it offers different kinds of food from different countries in a single marketplace. This allows customers to choose food according to their preferences, dietary requirements and budget. For example, people who follow specific diets can easily find products that meet their nutritional needs, while others can try food from different cultures without travelling abroad. As a result, consumers have greater freedom and convenience when purchasing food.

The secondary benefit of buying food from supermarkets is that they provide access to a variety of foods that might not be available locally. This is particularly beneficial for people who want to consume products that cannot be produced in their own countries because of climatic or geographical conditions. For example, supermarkets in Pakistan may sell tropical fruits or other products imported from countries where they are naturally produced. As a result, consumers can enjoy a wider range of food without travelling abroad.

In conclusion, buying food from supermarkets is beneficial because it allows consumers to access a variety of foods and choose products according to their preferences amd requirements that might not be available in local markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. The writer identifies two main supporting arguments: consumer freedom of choice and access to out-of-season or non-local produce. While the ideas are relevant, the development in the body paragraphs is somewhat repetitive, as both body paragraphs essentially circle back to the idea of having a wider range of food without travelling abroad. Additionally, the phrase 'preferences amd requirements' in the conclusion contains a minor typographical error. Overall, the task is addressed adequately with a clear stance, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'As a result', and 'The primary benefit' are utilized, though they tend to be a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, but the progression between paragraphs feels slightly circular because the second body paragraph reiterates similar points to the first regarding international variety and not needing to travel abroad. This places the text comfortably in Band 6.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'fast-paced society', 'nutritional needs', 'climatic or geographical conditions', and 'marketplace'. However, there is some lexical repetition, particularly with phrases like 'buying food from supermarkets' and 'different kinds of food'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary, word choices are generally safe and standard rather than ambitious. There is also a spelling typo ('amd' instead of 'and') in the conclusion. Communication is never impeded, reflecting a solid Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'products that cannot be produced in their own countries because of climatic or geographical conditions.' There are several error-free sentences, and punctuation is generally sound. However, occasional minor errors exist, such as spacing issues at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'society. In many countries...'). Despite these minor flaws, the grammar and sentence structures do not impede communication, making Band 6.0 a fair and accurate assessment.
