Student answer (Band 7.5)

Purchasing food has become a central aspect of daily life in today's fast-paced society. In many countries, consumers regularly visit supermarkets to buy imported goods sourced from across the globe. In my view, this is overwhelmingly a positive development because it overcomes local climatic limitations to provide year-round access to essential nutrients and fosters greater cultural appreciation through diverse culinary options.

The primary advantage of international food availability is that it eliminates geographical and seasonal constraints on diet. Certain regions, due to harsh weather conditions or infertile soil, cannot produce specific crops naturally. Supermarkets bridging this gap by stocking imported produce allow consumers to maintain a balanced, nutrient-rich diet regardless of the season. For example, countries in colder Northern climates can import tropical fruits like avocados, mangos, and bananas from equatorial regions during winter months. This ensures that populations have continuous access to fresh produce and dietary essentials, directly improving public health and nutrition.

Furthermore, the global availability of food enriches consumers' culinary experiences and supports multicultural communities. In an increasingly interconnected world, access to authentic international ingredients enables people to explore foreign cuisines without traveling abroad. For instance, expatriate communities in countries like Pakistan or the UK can easily purchase traditional spices, grains, and specialty products from their homelands, helping them preserve their cultural heritage. Additionally, domestic consumers are encouraged to experiment with new cooking styles and dietary choices, expanding their palate and fostering a broader global perspective.

In conclusion, the ability to purchase food produced worldwide in local supermarkets is a highly positive trend. It bypasses agricultural limitations to guarantee year-round nutritional diversity while simultaneously enriching cultural connection through food.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear, well-developed position that the global availability of food in supermarkets is a positive development. The writer presents two robust main arguments: overcoming seasonal/climatic constraints to ensure nutritional access, and enriching cultural experiences through diverse culinary options. Each body paragraph is supported by relevant and logical examples, such as importing tropical fruits during winter months and helping expatriates preserve cultural heritage. The ideas are extended and well-supported throughout, satisfying the criteria for a high band. There are no missing components or under-developed arguments, showing a thorough understanding of the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, starting from an introductory paragraph that outlines the writer's stance, followed by two well-structured body paragraphs, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'The primary advantage', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct, clearly stated central theme. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, ensuring that the flow of ideas remains smooth and easy for the reader to follow without any mechanical or awkward transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The student displays a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic response. Less common items such as 'climatic limitations', 'seasonal constraints', 'nutrient-rich diet', and 'expatriate communities' are used with good awareness of collocation and style. Word choice is generally precise, contributing effectively to the clarity and sophistication of the argument. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, but these do not impede communication in any way. The vocabulary successfully conveys nuanced ideas about agriculture, nutrition, and cultural appreciation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The essay exhibits a wide range of complex sentence structures, including participial phrases and dependent clauses, such as 'Certain regions, due to harsh weather conditions or infertile soil, cannot produce specific crops naturally.' The majority of sentences are entirely error-free, and the writer demonstrates strong control over grammar and punctuation. While there is a minor grammatical stumble in the phrase 'Supermarkets bridging this gap...', the overall command of complex syntax is impressive. Punctuation is accurate, and the grammatical structures support the sophisticated flow of arguments without causing any confusion for the reader.
