Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, supermarket in many countries offer a wide range of food products from different parts of the world. I believe this is a positive development because it provides consumers with greater choice and make international food more accessible.

One major advantage of this development is that consumers have a much greater access to a wide range of international food products. Moreover individuals can try different cuisines and purchase products that may not be available locally. This greater access allow people to experiment with new flavors and develop an interest in unfamiliar dishes. In addition, international food can be useful for some people who have different diet preference. For example, people in India can easily buy Italian pasta, Mexican sauces and Japanese noodles from many food retailers. This allow consumer to explore different cultures through food.

Another significant benefit is convenience. People do not need to travel abroad to experience and purchase foreign food products. This can both save time and money, particularly fir individuals who have busy life. Additionally, the availability of such products can be particularly useful for people who lived in another country and want to continue eating familiar food. For instance, an Indian students living in the UK may be able to find Indian spices and ready-made foods in local retail stores.

In conclusion, I consider the increasing availability of international food to be a positive development. Although imported products may sometimes be more expensive, the greater variety and convenience they offer make this trend beneficial for consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. The response outlines relevant ideas, such as increased choice, exposure to different cultures, and personal convenience, supporting them with examples like Indian consumers buying Italian pasta and students in the UK finding familiar spices. While the arguments are generally well-presented, some points are slightly repetitive, and the ideas could be extended further to reach higher band levels. For instance, the discussion on convenience could delve deeper into global supply chains or economic impacts. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled, and the position remains clear throughout the response, corresponding to a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7 descriptor profile, though constrained slightly by idea development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a logical overall progression with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs exploring distinct advantages (variety and convenience), and a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a separate main theme. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Another significant benefit'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen with minor errors in linking and sentence flow. For example, expressions like 'This greater access allow people' highlight minor mechanical issues in referencing the preceding clause. Despite these minor flaws, the text remains coherent and easy to follow throughout, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7 range comfortably.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'international food products', 'cuisines', 'convenience', and 'availability'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by word-choice, grammatical number, or collocation errors. For example, 'supermarket' should be plural ('supermarkets'), 'greater access' is repeated, and phrases like 'diet preference' would ideally be pluralised as 'dietary preferences'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. These characteristics place the response firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include 'Although imported products may sometimes be more expensive, the greater variety and convenience...' However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly concerning subject-verb agreement and pluralisation. For instance, 'supermarket in many countries offer' should be 'supermarkets... offer', 'This greater access allow' should be 'allows', 'fir individuals' contains a typographical error, and 'people who lived' should be 'people who live'. Despite these frequent minor errors, they rarely impede communication, aligning the response with the Band 6 descriptors.
