Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many countries now have all sort of international food in their superstores where customers can visit and buy things. I firmly believe it is a positive development. Firstly, it has brought convenience in people's lives with access to all form of food. Secondly, this can improve country's economic growth and help in development .

To begin with, many nations now provide wide range of international food in supermarkets which is very benefitial for it's citizens because individuals can now buy their favourite food from their nearby stores. In addition, now people do not have to order things online and wait for months to receive them, which in result can save their time. This development has brought convenience in people's lives by the availability of wide range of foreign food, for which previously people go to different countries or ask their relatives to bring their favourite things. For instance, many foreign countries now have traditional food and ingredients in their marts, which people used to order before. Consequently, this phenomenon has saved people's time and offered the food which is in demand.

Secondly, this development has improved overall country's economic growth because the person source all international food they order in bulk amount, stock them and sale them in high prices, which can increase total revenue of the country and at the same time making people's lives easier. Furthermore, supermarkets also pay taxes to government which can help in the development of a nation. For example, if people buy from their home country they will improve their country's economy

In conclusion, I believe that it is a positive development because it has brought convinience in individual's lives, while improving country's economy at the same time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by stating a clear position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. Ideas are presented and supported with reasons regarding convenience and economic growth. For example, the student explains how shopping locally saves time compared to ordering online, and notes that supermarkets contribute to the economy through taxation and bulk purchasing. However, some arguments remain somewhat repetitive and under-developed, particularly the economic explanation which lacks precise detail. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of Task Achievement adequately, earning a solid band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, two body paragraphs supporting the main points, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'To begin with', and 'In addition', although some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive (e.g., repeating 'this development'). Furthermore, pronoun referencing occasionally lacks absolute clarity, such as 'it's citizens' where the possessive determiner lacks an apostrophe. Nevertheless, the logical progression is maintained throughout, satisfying the criteria for a band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like 'economic growth', 'convenience', and 'availability'. However, there are notable word-choice errors, awkward collocations, and missing articles (e.g., 'all sort of international food', 'bring convenience in people's lives', 'country's economic growth' missing an article, and 'sale them in high prices'). Spelling issues also appear, such as 'benefitial' and 'convinience'. While communication is not impeded, these lexical slips and limitations restrict the score to a band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'if people buy from their home country they will improve their country's economy'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation inaccuracies throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement errors ('the person source all international food'), incorrect preposition use ('sale them in high prices'), and apostrophe misuse ('it's citizens' instead of 'its'). Complex structures are often prone to errors. Despite these frequent mistakes, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammar performance firmly at a band 5.5.
