Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, supermarkets in many countries offer a wide variety of imported food which have made people's lives easier. Although this trend may have some negative consequences, I firmly believe it is a positive development. This can contribute to the country's economic growth and bring convenience for the consumers.

One major advantage is that, supermarkets have brought a wide range of food from different parts of the world, increasing the availibility of imported food for the local residents. In the past, people have to wait for the seasonal fruits and vegetables, which is now often available in different stores at one place, increasing the choice of food for the people and fulfilling their dietry requirements. For example, people in Pakistan can have blueberries from Europe and avacados from South America. Furthermore, people can now try different international cuisines because of a wider availability of products. As a result, people can enjoy different cuisines and explore different food options.

Another benefit is that this can improve international food trade between countries and contribute in the country's economy. Supermarkets source imported food in bulks, stores it and sells it at higher prices from different manufactures, transporters and retailers, which can ultimately help in giving opportunities to people of the country. For instance, supermarkets has to increased its workers, which can facilitate people in finding products. In addition, this development will also encourage locals to produce some high variety of domestic food. As a result, contributing to the country' economic growth and improving employment ratio for the locals.

However, this development have some drawbacks which is due to importing food products from long distances, which can increase enviromental pollution, while neglecting domestic food can effect the country's local farmers. Despite, these disadvantages can be minimized by taking proper actions by the goverment.

In conclusion, although this development has some enviromental and domestic drawbacks, provides people convenience and contributes in the overall country's economic growth. While these drawbacks can be minimized if proper action is taken by the goverment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I firmly believe it is a positive development') and supporting it with relevant ideas throughout the response. The main body paragraphs discuss the convenience for consumers, dietary variety, and economic growth through international food trade. The negative consequences are also acknowledged in the fourth paragraph. Ideas are generally well-extended, such as the examples of importing blueberries from Europe and avocados from South America. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or lack deeper elaboration, keeping the response at a Band 7 level where all parts are addressed with a clear position and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with an introduction of the stance, moving to consumer benefits, economic advantages, acknowledging drawbacks, and concluding appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'One major advantage', 'Another benefit is', 'Furthermore', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. Nevertheless, occasional clunky transitions and repetitive phrasing in the conclusion prevent a higher score, aligning the performance closely with Band 7 descriptors where logical organisation and cohesive devices are employed with general flexibility.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'economic growth', 'international cuisines', 'dietary requirements', and 'environmental pollution'. There are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'availibility' instead of 'availability', 'dietry' instead of 'dietary', 'in bulks' instead of 'in bulk', and 'effect' instead of 'affect'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is generally functional and does not impede communication, matching the Band 6 profile where an adequate range is used with some noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses (e.g., 'which have made people's lives easier', 'supermarkets source imported food in bulks, stores it and sells it'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and lack of agreement, such as 'food... which have made', 'people have to wait' (tense shift), 'supermarkets has to increased', 'development have some drawbacks', and 'goverment'. These errors in grammar and punctuation occur regularly, though they rarely impede overall comprehension, placing the essay securely in the Band 6 category.
