Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays supermarkets in numerous countries offer a variety of food products that imported from different part of the world. I believe that this is a positive development because it gives consumers to greater choice and allow them to experince different cuisines.

One significant benefit of this is that it gives consumers to a wider variety of food choices. Individuals can try different cuisines and flavours at one place instead of traveling abroad. For example, Pakistani consumers can easily purchase Italian pasta, Chineese noodles, or Turkish sweets at one supermarket without travelling to another country. Moreover, consumers can have also access to wider range of high quality food because imported products always use natural and high quality ingredients in their products. For instance people always choose healthy products such as organic fruits. As a result, people have a large number of options of food products and also high quality products in their own country.

However, it is also important to consider that this trend also helpful for cultural development because when people try different countries traditional food products they want to learn more about their culture and their lifestyle. For instance, Pakistani people try Italian or Japnees food they may become more interested in learning more about their culture and traditions of these countries. As a result, food can help promote cultural understanding among people from different backgrounds.

In conclusion, I believe that the availability of food from different countries is a positive development. It gives consumers more choices, provides access to high-quality products, and allows people to experience different cuisines and cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as Pakistani consumers buying Italian pasta or Turkish sweets, and how this relates to cultural understanding. The main body paragraphs explore valid benefits including culinary variety, food quality, and cultural appreciation. However, some arguments lack deeper expansion and border on slight over-generalisation, such as the claim that imported products 'always use natural and high quality ingredients'. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0; it is awarded a Band 7.0 for presenting a clear position and extending relevant ideas throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to consumer choice and quality in the second paragraph, cultural development in the third, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, including transitional phrases like 'One significant benefit', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. However, there are minor cohesive awkwardnesses and slightly repetitive referencing structures ('consumers can... consumers can...'). Nevertheless, the logical flow is maintained from beginning to end, easily satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0. A score of 7.0 is justified by the clear overall progression and coherent structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using terms like 'cuisines', 'flavours', 'cultural understanding', and 'availability'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and topic-specific terms. However, there are several word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'that imported' (missing auxiliary verb), 'different part' (should be plural parts), 'allows them to experince' (spelling error), 'Chineese' (spelling error), and 'Japnees' (spelling error). These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips are noticeable, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 territory, where vocabulary is adequate for the task but contains frequent errors that do not severely impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'when people try different countries traditional food products they want to learn more...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb forms and prepositions. Examples include 'products that imported' (omission of 'are'), 'it gives consumers to greater choice' (unnecessary preposition), 'gives consumers to a wider variety' (incorrect structure), and missing apostrophes in possessives like 'countries traditional food'. While these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the argument, the frequency of basic grammatical inaccuracies prevents the score from reaching Band 6.5. A Band 6.0 is appropriate.
