Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the negative and positive aspects of global food trade and clearly states a position that it is an overwhelmingly positive development. Ideas are extended with relevant arguments, such as environmental impacts, the support of local farmers, improved health and nutrition, and economic benefits for developing nations. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly in places, and some arguments lack fully fleshed-out specific examples, relying instead on broad statements. Overall, the task is addressed well and meets the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid 6.0, fitting comfortably into Band 6 due to under-developed support in certain paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, as well as distinct body paragraphs following a traditional 'on the one hand / on the other hand' structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as abrupt transitions between sentences ('It also produce vast amount of greengas'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical progression within paragraphs is disrupted by grammatical fragmentation and awkward phrasing. These issues prevent the response from achieving a higher score, placing it firmly at Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'ecological footprint', 'subsidised mass production', and 'food security', demonstrating an adequate range for the task. However, there are frequent word-choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'overwhemligly', 'avaliability', 'greengas', 'relience', 'compelet', and 'aften'. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication because the reader can still grasp the intended meaning, they restrict the lexical score. The vocabulary demonstrates sufficient flexibility for basic task completion but lacks the precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and article usage. Examples include 'consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced', 'global trade can takes place', 'the widespread of food avaliability of imported food', and 'northen climates can access fresh tropical fruits and vegetable'. Punctuation is also erratic in places. These errors frequently cause strain for the reader, although meaning is generally recoverable, aligning the grammar with a Band 5.0 score.
