Student answer (Band 5.5)

The world has become global village, food from all over the world is now available in supermarket for buyers. I believe, this is a positive development because different verities are easily accessible and is a good opportunity for different businesses.

Before people used to travel for days and wait for months to get the desired food and satisfy their cravings. But these days one can find tens of verities at our local super market. In some countries, there is only one kind of weather that is why they are limited to few type of fruits so people didn't had much choice left which is not the case these days. Such as, my friend in UAE was craving for oranges, as oranges is the fruit of cold weather and not locally grown in United Arab Emirates, I went to super market and brought him imported oranges.

Many different options mean there is competition between vendors, there will ne no monopoly and the prices will be low for common men. For example, food chains like KFC and McDonald are introducing new deals in cheap price, every week to attract customers. Moreover, It is an opportunity for people to invest in food businesses as import export is east than ever before. Additionally, there are foods that are crucial for medical and health purposes are now available at door step. For Instance, powder milk are important for kids who are malnourished or whose mothers are unable to produce breast milk.

To conclude, I believe it is a positive development as food is an important aspect of life, hence Its should be available and accessible for everyone. Further more, different type of food means cheap price, also, it is an opportunity for people to earn good from food related businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of obtaining oranges in the UAE and how global supply chains prevent monopolies and lower prices. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or lack deeper elaboration, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 territory. For instance, the discussion on medical and health purposes like powdered milk is introduced abruptly without deep contextualisation. Overall, the prompt is fully addressed with relevant, albeit somewhat underdeveloped, ideas that satisfy the core requirements of Task 2.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic. Paragraphing is utilised correctly to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Before', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen with 'Such as, my friend in UAE'. Paragraph progression is logical, moving from historical context to competition, and finally to health benefits and conclusion. However, occasional awkward referencing keeps this criterion at a Band 6 level rather than a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'monopoly', 'malnourished', and 'imported'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation throughout the text. Examples include 'verities' instead of 'varieties', 'super market' written as two words, 'brought' instead of 'bought', 'ne no' instead of 'be no', 'in cheap price' instead of 'at a cheap price', and 'east' instead of 'easier'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include concessive and causal clauses, such as 'In some countries, there is only one kind of weather that is why they are limited to few type of fruits'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('at local super market', 'at door step'), tense issues ('people didn't had'), agreement errors ('few type of fruits', 'powder milk are important'), and punctuation slips. While these errors rarely completely obscure the meaning, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a Band 6.0.
