IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary era, globalisation has transformed the way people purchase and consume food. Nowadays, consumers find all international products at local supermarkets, which were difficult in the past. Therefore, I vehemently believe that this is a largely positive development, but it can create some cons for local producers.

The main advantage of international food availability is that it gives consumers greater choice and convenience. People can enjoy food from different cultures without travelling abroad, which can increase understanding and trade between contries. For instance, today, Indian supermarkets sell Italian pasta, Japanese souces and Mexican ingredients, which allows people to make different cuisines at home. Furthermore, people can taste variety of vegetables and fruits, it cannot be produce in local environment. For example, avacado, dragon fruit and some vegetables that cannot be produce in India, but nowadays it is common in supermarkets.

However, every aspect has pros and cons. This trend has some negative consequences for local producers and farmers. Sometime imported things are much cheaper compared to local products, so people generally buy cheaper products. This can directly impact on farmer's income. In addition, international products come from different contries, it requires considerable amount of fuel to cover long distance and increase carbon emissions. For instance, if fruits transport thousands of kilometers by road, air, and ships, it increases cabon dioxide levels in the environment.

To recapitulate, although consumers get greater choice, convenience, exploring new things and different cultures, it may put pressure on the environment by increase carbon emissions though refrigerator trucks and ships and impact on farmers.
