IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recently, due to globalization and international trade, many supermarkets all around the globe have access to food produced worldwide. I largely believe it is a significantly positive development because it allows individuals to experience different delicacies without travelling around the world. Additionally, it can be a relief for immigrants finding their home food at international supermarkets.

First and foremost, people don't have to spend a tremendous amount of money to travel across the world to enjoy cuisines and tastes. Now, a variety of foods ranging from Asian, African, and American are available at nearby markets. For instance, food bloggers don't have to travel to Mumbai to taste Indian food; they can access it near them. Additionally, my friends in the USA love Pakistani biryani, and whenever they crave it, they go to the supermarket, buy the required ingredients, follow the recipe, and have their biryani ready at home.

Secondly, most of the population worldwide comprises immigrants who transition to other countries either for safety or for job opportunities. They often miss the comfort and taste of their local food, and these supermarkets offer international varieties of food that help them feel at home. When I was in the United States of America for my exchange semester, I missed Pakistani food dearly and couldn't adapt to American food. There was a Walmart near my dorm that had the national spices, packaged curries, and other products. It became a huge help for surviving in that place.

In conclusion, supermarkets have tremendous advantages for immigrants and foster cultural diversity by promoting various national cuisines across the world.
