In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Student answer (Band 7.0)
As an international student a decade ago, my uncle gravely missed Indian cuisine. And his fix came from the Indian supermarket across town which housed all kinds of spices, snacks and ready-to-eat meals. This stands true for most people living away from home. Simultaneously, my cravings for a Chipotle tex mex bowl can be satiated with the right ingredients from the store next to my house.
Supermarkets, with the help of technological advancements and international trade, have bridged the geographical gap between consumers and producers. I find it to be a positive development that showcases the interconnection of economies and consumer markets. It is akin to what globalisation and the advent of internet have done for cultural communication and professional growth. Exchanging receipes and culinary heritage only seems like the next logical facet of the growing cross-border contact, realising the idea of a 'global village'.
This cultural exchange, I believe, is the cornerstone of transnational cooperation between people that fosters a sense of fraternity. Furthermore, it is a catalyst as well as a consequence of economic growth and globalisation. International markets possess a growth potential that generate higher profits and more employment.
Backed by this, Indian brands like Dabur and Marico have become staples in households abroad - facilitating economic and cultural exchange. Same can be seen in the case of international brands like Nestle. Now, one can explore the taste of Belgian chocolate from the comfort of their home; and a homesick student abroad can make her comfort meal even when she is continents apart from home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by clearly presenting the position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. The essay develops this stance through logical extensions, such as cultural exchange, transnational cooperation, and economic growth, supported by relevant examples like Indian supermarkets and brands such as Dabur and Marico. All parts of the task are well covered, and the ideas are sustained throughout the response. The position remains clear and consistent from the opening anecdote to the concluding remarks, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured sensibly, moving from a personal introductory anecdote to broader socioeconomic impacts, and finally to specific brand examples. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. Cohesive devices are handled effectively, as seen in transitions like 'Simultaneously,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Backed by this.' Although referencing and cohesion are generally clear, minor mechanical lapses keep the text from reaching higher bands, making a Band 7 score most appropriate.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The writer displays a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common items and collocation such as 'satiated,' 'cornerstone,' 'catalyst,' and 'transnational cooperation.' There are occasional slips, such as the misspelling 'receipes' instead of 'recipes' and a slight phrasing awkwardness in 'Same can be seen,' but these minor lexical errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary chosen adequately serves the argument and reflects a solid Band 7 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The essay utilizes a variety of complex sentence structures with good control of grammar and punctuation. Examples of successful complex forms include participial phrases ('Backed by this, Indian brands...') and relative clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, though minor slips occur, such as the omission of an article in 'Same can be seen' (which should be 'The same can be seen'). These infrequent errors do not interfere with understanding, and the grammatical control comfortably positions the writing at Band 7.
