Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that global food availability is a positive development, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, which keeps the score at this level. While the writer mentions time-saving aspects, online ordering, and economic growth, these points lack deep extension or specific, well-elaborated examples. For instance, the example provided about getting medicines delivered when unwell shifts away from the core topic of global food in supermarkets. Furthermore, the conclusion introduces a contradiction by stating that the trend has a negative aspect that should not be ignored, which blurs the clarity of the initial position. To move forward, the writer needs to present fully extended ideas with deeper explanations and maintain a consistent, clearly supported stance throughout all paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a basic overall organisation with clear paragraph breaks, attempting to move from local convenience to international trade and a concluding remark. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by abrupt transitions and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used rather mechanically, such as repetitive starting phrases ('Furthermore', 'In conclusion'), and referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in the final paragraph where pronouns and connections feel disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical links between sentences need strengthening. To achieve a higher level, the writer should ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one, employing a wider variety of cohesive devices smoothly and ensuring that referencing and paragraph transitions guide the reader effortlessly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about supermarkets and shopping. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'development', 'supermarket', and 'economy', but struggles with accuracy, leading to noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include spelling and word form errors such as 'posivite' instead of positive, 'beleive', and awkward phrasing like 'provide facilities to their locality at their hometown' or 'intrested in buying'. These lexical inaccuracies and non-standard collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the range. To improve, the student must expand their active vocabulary and focus on precise word choices, correct word forms, and natural collocations, while also paying closer attention to basic spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage which can cause difficulty for the reader. Noticeable issues include missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms or tenses, and awkward clause structures, such as 'leads to satisfaction their needs' and 'placing order by their mobilephones'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement also show consistent lapses. To reach the next level, the writer needs to increase the variety of complex sentence structures and exercise much better control over basic grammatical patterns, tense consistency, and prepositions, ensuring that sentences are largely error-free and do not impede communication.
