Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only minimally, as the discussion frequently digresses into unrelated issues such as international aid, charity, and poverty rather than focusing on the global food trade. While the writer attempts to take a position by stating it is a positive development 'at some extent', the ideas remain very limited and under-developed. For example, the argument that supermarkets provide fresh food is stated without extension or clear support. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to directly answer the prompt regarding the global sourcing of food, maintain focus on the core topic throughout, and extend main ideas with specific explanations and relevant examples rather than shifting to discussions about developing nations and charity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The essay displays some overall organization with basic paragraph breaks, but information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The progression of ideas is often difficult to follow because sentences jump abruptly between different concepts, such as moving from the health benefits of supermarkets directly to charity for developing nations. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, with basic connectors like 'On the one hand' and 'To conclude' failing to establish clear logical links between the arguments. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to discern what specific pronouns refer to. To improve, the writer must ensure that each paragraph has a clear central topic and that cohesive devices are used accurately to guide the reader smoothly through a logical line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and frequently repetitive, with frequent lexical inaccuracies and inappropriate word choices that strain the reader's comprehension. Expressions such as 'living accessories' instead of everyday goods or food items, and 'under develop countries' instead of developing countries, show a limited and inadequate command of word forms and collocations. Additionally, terms are sometimes misused in ways that obscure the intended meaning. To move toward a higher band, the writer needs to build a wider range of vocabulary appropriate for academic discussions, pay careful attention to word formation and word classes, and select precise terms to convey ideas accurately without relying on repetitive, awkward phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay relies on a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the food in supermarkets are', incorrect article usage, and awkward prepositional phrases within grammatical patterns. Punctuation errors are also noticeable, including unnecessary commas that disrupt the flow of sentences. To achieve a higher score, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of grammatical structures while improving accuracy, ensuring that basic sentence patterns, verb forms, and plurals are handled correctly to minimize disruptions in communication.
