Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that the global availability of food is a positive development. Main ideas are introduced, such as health benefits, culinary exploration, and reducing homesickness for expatriates. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on avocados and healthy diets lacks depth and relies on over-generalisation. Similarly, the point regarding homesickness is introduced but remains somewhat repetitive rather than being thoroughly extended with concrete examples. Overall, the ideas are relevant, but several points would benefit from further elaboration to reach a higher level of development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the writing is divided into logical paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, as seen in repetitive transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, but within paragraphs, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward transitions and slightly repetitive phrasing. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas from sentence to sentence feels smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'state-of-the-art era' and 'paragon'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the response, including 'accesible', 'avaible', 'Avacado', 'thier', and 'leave' instead of 'live'. Furthermore, some collocations are awkward, such as 'fancy imported foods costs a hefty amount'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and demonstrate limitations in precision, placing the vocabulary use firmly within this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'imported foods have there own benefits' and 'fancy imported foods costs', article omissions or misuse, and preposition errors such as 'leaving outside there home country'. Although the meaning is generally clear despite these mistakes, the frequent presence of grammatical slips means that error-free sentences are not in the majority, which prevents the writing from achieving a higher rating.
