Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's increasingly global world, people can buy food produced all over the world by just walking in a supermarket.Although, it shows concerns related to the environment, overall, I think it has a positive effect on development providing great food choices and making people culturally aware.

There are several reasons why imported food is a positive development, a huge varitey of food options being the prominent one. Supermarkets import all kinds of food items, whether they are ready-to-eat dishes or ingredients to make a michelin star level dish from all over the world. It gives people plenty of varied items to pick from and helps people to have different meals every day.For instance, in India, supermarts have various kinds of sauces, cheeses and spice mixes which helps us in making an international dish at our homes.Consequently, people prefer going to the marts to buy such products.

Whenever food is discussed, culture eventually starts playing an important role. Not only these foods provides a variety of options but also makes people aware about the culture that the product has brought along it.Consumers get to know about the sense of taste, likes and dislikes of people of the country from where the food is bought. For example, an indian buying korean ramen(a type of noodles) in supermarts would get to know that the spices used there and the ones used in India have a huge difference and would cipher about the preferences of people in the other country. As a result, it might help in knowing about the trends, or the culture relating to that country.

However, There is also a drawback which is a huge concern for the environment. This is when the food products are imported or exported by a country via waterways, roadways or airways, a lot of fuel is used and emissions are produced that are hazardous for our health, nature and air quality. But if this issue is controlled by the authorities governing this system then it is an overall positive effect on a country's development and can even invrease its econmy.

In conclusion, supermarkets are overall beneficial to a country and poses almost no threats if major problems are addressed accordingly.

Overall6.5

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both the positive and negative aspects of global food supply in supermarkets. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. For example, the first body paragraph clearly explains the benefit of a wide variety of food options with a relevant local example from India. In contrast, the discussion of environmental drawbacks in the fourth paragraph remains somewhat general and lacks deep elaboration. The position is maintained throughout the essay, but the overall extension of ideas demonstrates the characteristics of the awarded band where certain points are explored more thoroughly than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, such as the variety of food choices or cultural awareness, and basic paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas together, though referencing and transitions are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of phrases like 'For example' and 'As a result'. Furthermore, spacing issues and minor punctuation slips around cohesive markers, such as 'Although, it shows' and 'However, There is', highlight some weaknesses in internal cohesion, capturing the transition into the next band level where cohesion is occasionally faulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'global world', 'michelin star level', and 'hazardous'. However, there are several word choice, spelling, and word form inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'varitey' instead of 'variety', 'supermarts', and 'invrease its econmy'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect the limitations expected at this band level. The writer shows an awareness of style by attempting topic-specific vocabulary related to international trade and culture, but occasional slips in collocation and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions, missing spaces after periods ('every day.For instance'), and verb-subject agreement issues like 'Not only these foods provides'. Despite these errors, the punctuation and structural mistakes rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader. The mix of error-free simple sentences alongside faulty complex structures aligns well with the standards of this band, showing partial control of grammar while still containing persistent minor errors.
