Student answer (Band 6.5)

Most of the countries now have the supermarkets where food produced all over the world is available. In my opinion, this is a positive development as this ensures quality and provides ease of access.

Firstly, supermarkets perform certain testings and inspections in order to ensure the quality of the food and whether it is edible or not. Before placing food from across the world on the shelf for sale its expiry and freshness is checked by the people trained for this job. Certificates of these inspetcions can be accessed via QR codes on the tags attached to these products. This builds trust in customers and also provides them information about where the product came from and the processes it's been through.

Secondly, people don't have to go through the hassle of ordering a food product in some other corner of the world through some traditional means. They can just visit the supermarket and buy the product, thus these markets provide people ease of access. Nowadays, it has been made even easier with help of technology. For example, people can just go online, search the food product they may be interested in. They can hover over websites reading their guidelines on how the product will arrive at their door from some other part of the world. They can select the product most suitable for them. Then, they may just fill out the form and place the order and the product will be at their doorstep.

In conclusion, hygiene, quality and ease of access are the major concerns of people when the topic is food. All these concerns are attended to carefully and precisely. Thus, proving availability of food from all over the world in supermarkets to be a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. Ideas are relevant, focusing on quality assurance and convenience. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of the mid-level performance. For instance, the first body paragraph touches upon testing, inspections, and QR codes, but the second body paragraph shifts focus somewhat towards online ordering and home delivery rather than strictly supermarket availability of global food. To reach higher bands, every main idea needs to be fully extended and supported without digressing into secondary concepts like online delivery logistics.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text demonstrates a clear logical organization with an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Progression throughout the essay is generally clear, and the writer uses logical markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to sequence ideas. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and appropriately, as each paragraph has a distinct central topic. To achieve an even higher score, the integration of cohesive devices could be smoother and less mechanical, avoiding occasional reliance on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas about food safety and accessibility. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'inspections', 'freshness', and 'convenience-related concepts'. However, there are minor issues with word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as the typographical error 'inspetcions' and awkward phrases like 'perform certain testings' instead of 'conduct certain tests'. These occasional errors and imprecise lexical choices do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of precision and stylistic sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses ('Before placing food... its expiry and freshness is checked') and conditional or participial elements. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions ('ordering a food product' or 'with help of technology') and subject-verb agreement slips, but these errors rarely impede communication. The control over grammar shows an adequate foundation of complex structures, though frequent error-free sentences are not yet sustained consistently enough to merit a higher tier.
