Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of consuming globally produced food, culminating in a clear overall position. The ideas presented are relevant, but some are under-developed or lack sufficient elaboration. For instance, the point regarding climate change and geographical limitations is introduced rather abruptly without fully explaining how importing goods creates a stronger bond between nations. Similarly, the conclusion introduces sentence fragments rather than fully synthesising the arguments. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be extended with well-reasoned explanations and fully supported examples, ensuring that no point feels brief or rushed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement and follows a clear paragraph structure, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'To commence with', 'For example', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the slightly awkward signposting phrases like 'To justify this, it also promotes...' which disrupt the natural flow of ideas. Additionally, the progression within the second body paragraph stumbles slightly due to abrupt shifts between cultural understanding and climate limitations. Improving logical transitions and ensuring referencing is consistently clear will enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'geographical limitation', 'transportation expenses', and 'carbon emission'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'coustomers', 'develpoment', 'paagraphs', 'provied', 'excess' instead of 'access', 'japanies', 'ingreadents', 'Additionaly', 'emphaseze', and 'thair'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they highlight a limited control over word forms and spelling accuracy. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire and eliminate recurring spelling mistakes by carefully checking their work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples of these errors include 'supermarkets in many countries offers', 'which are produce', 'food which grow in a large scale', 'transportation which contain that product such as trucks it consume', and incomplete sentence structures such as 'Moreover, climate change and geographical limitation.' Punctuation errors also appear, particularly in the conclusion where clauses are left hanging as fragments. To improve, the writer needs to exercise better control over complex sentence patterns, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and reduce basic grammatical slips.
