IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The consumers needs define what product is most used in the market and what the supermarket want to bring in the shelves to sell the product.

As per my opinion it is a negative imapct on the development of any country specially if the country is goes through a financial crisis situaion or it is agriculture country.

Many farmers don,t paid well due to availbility of other similar category products was there for consumer from other country.

There are multiple negative aspect that are related with them like if the native product is not used by the consumer we saw shortage of jobs in the market for the people.Example if the local foor is not purchase preference of consumer it directly effective the small farmers which sell their wheat for small amount of money.

The product of other countries are aailble in suermarket in heavy prices as government impose duty and other taxes on that product.

we Have a best exmaple of india and pakistan both are neighbouring countries we saw india has many automobile companies which are made in india where as pakistan has no automobile company which have their manufacturing plant in pakistan which cost they need to purchase a foreign comapny vehicles in double amount than india local market car.

Each country has it own flagship product in the world just beacause the people want to purchase their local product over other international product. If people prefered international product over local product the country is unable to produce any flagship product in the world.

The patriotic socities always choose local goods over other countries goods they help their government local by contributing in local industries by purchasing their product.

The conclusion where i reached at the end of the topic is that choosing local product over other countries product always bring more benifits and i saw those country more sucessful and happy whose show sincereity with their local industries product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that global supermarket food is a negative development, particularly for local farmers and industries. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, aligning with a partial treatment of the task. While the writer attempts to provide examples, such as comparing India and Pakistan's automotive sectors, the arguments become slightly disjointed and lose focus on the core topic of imported food products. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop their main arguments with more relevant and accurate supporting evidence, maintaining a direct focus on the socio-economic impacts of global food trade throughout the entire response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response shows some organisation, such as a clear opening stance and a concluding summary, but lacks an overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with several single-sentence paragraphs and a lack of clear topical separation. Furthermore, cohesive devices are largely inadequate or repetitive, leading to choppy transitions between sentences and ideas, such as moving abruptly from local food to car manufacturing without logical signposting. To achieve a higher band, the writer must implement a clear paragraph structure where each paragraph has a distinct central topic, and use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common terms like 'flagship product' and 'patriotic socities', but these are accompanied by word choice and word form errors, such as 'imapct' instead of impact, 'availbility', 'aailble', and 'suermarket'. There are also frequent spelling and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. To reach the next band, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire and improve spelling and word choice precision, ensuring that vocabulary is used accurately to convey complex ideas without straining the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'The consumers needs define', missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and run-on sentences. For instance, clauses are often strung together without proper punctuation or conjunctions. To improve this criterion, the writer must work on controlling basic sentence mechanics, ensuring correct tense usage, and producing a reliable mix of error-free simple and complex structures.
