IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Today food from every country is available for customers in the supermarket. I believe that this is a positive development as many tourists that travel around the world, if are not comfortable eating food from that country they could have access to products from their nation.
Many tourists that have different ethnicity when they travel around the world due to certain religious norms are not allowed to eat a specific type of meat or herb or some may be prohibited to drink alcohol. For instance in China many people eat pork meat and other insects which is not allowed to eat in Islam so many Muslim tourists have to look for alternatives. If food from their country is available in supermarket they would not be in hassle to find special restaurants or shops.
Furthermore, If food from different countries is available in supermarkets many people would not have to spend thousands of dollar in order to travel to a country to try their food. This not only boosts economic growth of countries but also strengthens their bond as the exports increases. For instance, Pakistan is known for its export level mangoes and generates a lot of revenue in this regard by selling it to other countries. It also imports tea leaves from other countries as well.
In conclusion, having food of another country in supermarket does not effect a nation negatively. In my opinion It strengthens trust built between countries while its residents are able to enjoy food of different flavor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that the global availability of food in supermarkets is a positive development. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as catering to dietary restrictions for tourists and boosting economic growth through international trade. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full clarity. For example, the argument regarding tourists struggling to find alternative food is somewhat repetitive and narrows the scope primarily to dietary restrictions rather than exploring broader economic or cultural impacts. The example of Pakistan exporting mangoes supports the trade argument, but the reasoning remains basic, preventing the response from reaching a higher level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic. Each paragraph has a discernible focus, moving from an introduction to specific examples concerning dietary needs and international trade, followed by a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', though some links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing could be managed more effectively to separate distinct sub-points, and the logical progression between sentences occasionally falters due to abrupt shifts in focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using common terms related to trade and food, such as 'supermarket', 'economic growth', 'exports', and 'revenue'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'export level mangoes' instead of 'export-quality mangoes' or stating that food 'does not effect a nation negatively' where 'affect' is required. Spelling and word-choice errors do occur, but they are infrequent enough that they do not impede communication, placing the response securely in this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination with structures like 'If food from their country is available...'. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles ('in supermarket'), preposition errors ('spend thousands of dollar' instead of 'dollars'), and minor agreement issues. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, and the complex structures attempted show a willingness to vary sentence patterns, even if control over them remains inconsistent.
