Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many countries today, people can visit supermarkets and purchase food products manufactured from different parts of the world. While this trend has some disadvantages, such as harming local producers and increasing environmental problems, I believe that is a positive development overall because it provide consumers with greater choice and better access to food.

To begin with, there are several compelling reasons why development of supermarket can be consider valid. First and foremost, people can access food from different countries. In other words, every type of food are not available in single country. This is particularly significant because different crops require distinct weather conditions. A pertinent example of this can be seen in India, lands of India are not suitable for Avocado farming. Consequently, people can buy Avocado from supermarket. Furthermore, another noteworthy consideration is that consumers have more choices. As a result, the price of a single food item does not increase due to demand. Equally importantly, imported food can provide products which are not locally available. People can enjoy certain fruits or food products outside their normal season.

Nevertheless, the aforementioned argument has certain limitations that warrant careful consideration. The most compelling counterarguments is that imported products may compete with locally produced food. Small farmers and local businesses may struggle to compete with international companies. Moreover, food transported over long distances require more fuel. As a result, this can increase carbon emissions and environmental damage. More importantly, countries may become more depended on foreign companies. Problems such as wars, pandemics, or transport disruptions can affect food availability.

In conclusion, although the availability of food from different parts of world can negatively affect local producers and the environment, I believe that it is positive development overall because it provides consumers with great choice and easier access to a variety of food products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the negative aspects and presenting a clear position that it is a positive development overall. The main ideas are relevant and generally easy to follow, but some aspects are more fully developed than others. For instance, the paragraph outlining the benefits touches on multiple points like crop conditions, consumer choice, and out-of-season availability, but these ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended with deep analysis. The counter-arguments regarding local farmers and environmental damage are also mentioned clearly, yet could benefit from further elaboration to reach the highest standards. Overall, the ideas presented are sufficient for a solid, competent treatment of the prompt, successfully meeting the requirements of presenting a well-rounded viewpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction, through the body paragraphs, to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, such as the benefits versus the drawbacks of imported foods. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas together, using transition phrases like 'To begin with', 'First and foremost', and 'Nevertheless'. However, the cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing can occasionally lack seamless fluidity, as seen with transitions like 'Equally importantly'. The overall structure clearly guides the reader through the writer's argument, satisfying the criteria for logical organization.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about global trade, environmental impacts, and consumer choice. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'compelling reasons', 'carbon emissions', and 'transport disruptions'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'manufactured from different parts of the world' instead of 'sourced', or 'lands of India are not suitable' rather than 'the land in India'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the arguments presented.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully in sentences like 'While this trend has some disadvantages... I believe that is a positive development overall.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement and plurals, such as 'development of supermarket can be consider valid' and 'every type of food are not available'. Additionally, articles and prepositions show occasional lapses, as in 'depended on foreign companies' instead of 'dependent'. Despite these persistent errors, they rarely impede communication, and the fundamental sentence structures remain clear and controllable.
