IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries nowadays, consumers can buy food produced in different parts of the worlf from their local departments. I believe this is a positive development, as it provides with greater choice and allows them to experience different cultures, although it may have some environmental drawbacks.

On major advantage of having food from around the world is that consumers have a much wider range of choices. People can purchase products that may not be available in their own country because of differences in climate and agriculture conditions. For example, people living in India can easily buy fruits such as Avocados or foods such as Italian pasta and Japanese sauces. This variety allows consumers to choose products according to their personal tastes and dietary need. In addition, imported food can be particularly useful for people who have moved abroad and want to continue eating products that are familiar to them.

Another significant benefits is that international food trade can strengthen economic and cultural connections between countries. Farmers and food producers can reach customers in foreign markets, which can create additional income and employment opportunities. At the same time, consumer can become familiar with the traditions and cuisines of other cultures through the food they purchase. For instance, the growing popularity of Japanese, Korean and Mexican food in countries where these cuisines were previously less common shows how food can encourage cultural exchanges.

Admittedly, transporting food over long distances can contribute to environmental problems because of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. There is also a possibility that consumers can choose imported goods over locally produced food, which could negatively affect local farmers. However, these disadvantages can be reduced by encouraging sustainable transportation and maintaining a reasonable balance between imported and locally produced goods.

In conclusion, I consider the availability of food from around the world to be a positive development. Despite some environmental and economic concerns, the greater variety of food, increased consumer choice and opportunities for international trade and cultural exchange make this development beneficial overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—this is a positive development—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the question with relevant reasons: wider consumer choice, access to familiar foods for people living abroad, economic opportunities, and cultural exchange. The examples of Indian consumers buying avocados and international cuisines becoming popular help make the discussion concrete. You also acknowledge environmental costs and possible effects on local farmers, then explain how these could be managed. This gives the response a well-rounded argument. To develop it further, explain the scale or conditions of some claims—for example, how imported food creates employment, or when sustainable transport can realistically reduce emissions—rather than relying on broad assertions. Overall, the task is addressed and the main ideas are extended and supported, though some points could be more fully substantiated.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop benefits, a separate paragraph considers drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Ideas progress logically within each paragraph, and signposting such as “In addition,” “Admittedly,” and “However” helps readers follow the argument. The examples are generally placed where they support the relevant point. Cohesion is sometimes a little formulaic, however, with paragraphs introduced through predictable phrases such as “One major advantage” and “Another significant benefit.” Some links between claims could also be more explicit, particularly the move from international trade to employment and then cultural familiarity. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make the relationship between each supporting example and its claim more precise, while retaining this clear overall organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “agriculture conditions,” “employment opportunities,” “greenhouse gas emissions,” and “cultural exchanges.” Phrases such as “a reasonable balance” and “familiar to them” communicate the ideas clearly, and the vocabulary is generally appropriate to an academic discussion. There are occasional errors in word form, spelling, and collocation that prevent the language from sounding consistently precise: “worlf” is a spelling slip, “dietary need” would normally be plural here, and “strengthen economic and cultural connections” is less exact when the following explanation focuses on trade and cuisine. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and forms during proofreading. For instance, you could specify “agricultural conditions” and distinguish between economic links created by trade and cultural exchange encouraged by cuisine.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a good mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “although it may have some environmental drawbacks” and “because of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.” Most sentences are clear, and the conditional construction “which could negatively affect local farmers” is handled effectively. A few grammatical errors remain. The opening says “it provides with greater choice,” which needs an object after “provides” (“provides consumers with…”); “On major advantage” should be “One major advantage”; and “Another significant benefits” has a singular–plural agreement problem. There is also a missing article in “because of differences in climate and agriculture conditions” if phrased as “the climate and agricultural conditions.” These are local rather than meaning-blocking issues. Proofread articles, agreement, and verb patterns to make your otherwise varied structures more consistently accurate.
