Student answer (Band 6.5)

Going to supermarket and buying any kind of international food has become a popular practice in so many countries these days. While there are a few reasons that this development has some drawbacks, I personally believe that this trend is a positive initiative owing to its significance in terms of health and economic benefits.

Accessibility of different types of food provides a number of advantages related to health. There are variety of foods that offers distinct nutritional benefits but most of them are region-specific. Therefore, importing such items do not only let consumers purchase them, but it also helps individuals to enjoy the savour of those tasty foods without even travelling to those places in real and then having them. For example, Avocados which are famous for their nutritional benefits, are ot produced originally in Pakistan, and therefore frequently imported, which lets consumers buy them and consume according to their nutritional needs.

Moreover, provision of such global food items hugely benefits the economies of countries. Supermarkets are a great source of revenue generation, and therefore providing their consumers with a variety of food items helps them generate huge amount of sales that directly contributes to the economy of a country. Not only does it helps them make money, it also increases the ratio of people visiting their stores. For instance, a recently opened Hotpot corner at supermarket named 'Markitt' in Karachi became quite popular for providing authentic chinese cuisine and ultimately gained number of visitors. Therefore, such access benefits both consumers as well as economies of countries.

In conclusion, supermarkets having food that is produced all over the world does not only benefits consumers but gives a greater advantage to the economies of countries. Therefore, I highly think of it as a positive development and hope that this practice will be continued in the near future as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you consider worldwide supermarket food a positive development. You support this with two relevant lines of reasoning—access to nutritious foods and economic benefits—and include examples such as avocados in Pakistan and the Karachi hotpot corner. This addresses the question and shows some development beyond simply stating an opinion. However, the health argument focuses partly on taste and convenience, while the economic link between greater supermarket sales and benefits to a country is asserted rather than explained. The opposing drawbacks mentioned in the introduction are not discussed. To strengthen the response, develop the main claims with clearer explanation and evidence, and either briefly acknowledge a drawback or avoid promising one that is not explored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, each body paragraph develops a separate reason, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from consumer health to economic effects is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This is a strong organisational foundation. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and repeated use of “therefore” makes relationships sound formulaic. In the second body paragraph, the move from supermarket revenue to the number of visitors could be connected more explicitly to the wider economy. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make the logical links between each example and its claim more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “nutritional benefits,” “region-specific,” “revenue generation,” and “authentic cuisine.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “positive initiative” and “provision of such global food items,” but some expressions are unnatural or imprecise. For example, “savour of those tasty foods” is not a natural way to express the benefit, and “ratio of people visiting” would be better expressed as an increase in visitor numbers. There are spelling and word-form slips, including “ot” and “chinese.” Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than adding formality, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening (“While there are a few reasons…”) and an inverted construction (“Not only does it…”). These show a willingness to vary sentence patterns, and the central meaning remains understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms recur. Examples include “There are variety” instead of “There is a variety,” “foods that offers” instead of “foods that offer,” and “does not only benefits” instead of “does not only benefit.” The sentence beginning “Avocados which are famous…” also needs clearer punctuation and sentence structure. Review subject–verb agreement and auxiliary verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for articles and punctuation. Greater accuracy in these structures would make your complex sentences more controlled.
