IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In this rapidly evolving era, many nations purchasers buy food items from the supermarket by visiting and choose products available globally in their market. I believe this is a positive development and going to specify this with reasons in the upcoming paragraphs.
Commencing with the positive points, the first and foremost key factor is greater variety of food. To illustrate this, people can access food from distinct countries with maximum range of food items even those which cannot be available in certain climates can be accessed by the market. For instance, Indian customers purchase mexican sauces, italian pasta and korean noodles easily. Another analysing factor is economic benefits. To explicate this, international food trades create more jobs for farmers, transportation, packaging and retail. Farmers on the other hand can reach international markets to increase their income.
Moving forward to the next positive point that is better consumer choice and competition. To explain this, when supermarkets sell overseas products in their own country, local people face more competition that their products are not getting sale due to quality and price. So they try to make it more affordable and improve quality to be in competion which benefits them directly as well as buyers.
To recapitulate, although local farmers face competitions and other hurdles to slae their food items however, this is a positive development to make the quality better and have variety of food items in off season too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider worldwide supermarket food a positive development, and the conclusion maintains this view. You give relevant reasons—greater variety, employment and income opportunities, and pressure on local producers to improve quality and prices—and the examples of Mexican sauces, Italian pasta and Korean noodles make the variety point concrete. However, the economic benefit and competition arguments are asserted more than explained; for example, clarify how trade creates jobs or how competition leads to better products. The conclusion briefly acknowledges difficulties for local farmers but does not explain them. The response also falls 12 words short of the required minimum, so adding a developed example or explanation would help meet the task requirement as well as strengthen your support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting positive reasons, and a concluding summary. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposting such as “To illustrate this” and “To recapitulate” helps readers follow the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement. To move further, make the links between claims more natural and less formulaic: “Commencing with the positive points,” “Another analysing factor,” and “Moving forward to the next positive point” repeatedly announce the structure rather than develop it. Some references are also unclear, particularly “they try to make it more affordable,” where “they” could refer to local producers or their products. Use clearer references and connect each explanation directly to its supporting example.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “international food trades,” “transportation,” “packaging,” “competition,” and “consumer choice.” The country-specific food examples also make the discussion more precise. There are attempts at less common or formal expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “maximum range of food items,” “Another analysing factor,” and “face more competition that their products are not getting sale.” Spelling errors such as “competion” and “slae” also reduce accuracy, although the main meaning remains understandable. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; simpler, precise phrasing is more effective than formal-sounding expressions that do not fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “food items even those which cannot be available in certain climates” and a conditional structure beginning “when supermarkets sell overseas products.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “many nations purchasers buy” has an incorrect noun structure, while “people can access food … even those which” lacks a clear grammatical link between the ideas. In the final sentence, “although … however” combines two contrasting conjunctions, and the clause structure is difficult to follow. Practise building accurate complex sentences, especially with relative clauses and contrast clauses, and check subject–verb relationships and sentence boundaries.
