Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent months, it has been greatly noticed in several countries that customers purchasing at a supermarket have access to greater food items produced globally. While making foreign foods available is a great way to facilitate individuals' choices, I believe that it leads to a negative development of the country in the long term. This essay will discuss both aspects of the developments.
On the one hand, when consumers have the ability to purchase food made from foreign countries there is a high possibility for the supermarket brands to generate higher revenue. Many people often prefer trying cuisines from different countries as it allows them to experience it's food without physically traveling there. For example, if a person is a fond of Italian food, supermarkets with great variety of Italian consumables can generate substantial profits as the customers would potentially repeatedly purchase from that supermarket. Furthermore, this approach would also consequently result in greater foreign relations between the countries in the long term.
On the contrary, this idea has also several drawbacks that could negatively influence the country's tradition and native businesses. When people are highly driven towards consuming foreign food, the amount of native traditional food business gradually declines, consequently resulting in financial loss for local food businesses. Moreover, as individuals seem to regularly favour imported produce over local dishes. They would be losing an integral part of their cultural identity and heritage. Furthermore in the long term they would gradually drift away from their own traditional cuisine which is a major setback for cultural preservation. For instance, in Indonesia many youngsters opt for Western cuisine over traditional cuisine like 'Gado-gado' which are often regarded as old-fashioned.
In conclusion, supermarkets providing foreign produce can financially benefit from it and also provide great satisfaction to their customers which helps in repeat purchases. However, I believe that prioritising offshore produce can result in long-term cultural loss and also disrupt local food businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear: although imported food offers choice and commercial benefits, you judge its long-term effects on local culture and businesses to be negative. You address both sides and support your points with relevant examples, including the Italian-food supermarket and Indonesian young people choosing Western cuisine over gado-gado. The discussion of cultural identity and local businesses is particularly relevant. To strengthen the response further, develop the claim that imported food improves “foreign relations,” since the link is asserted rather than explained, and clarify how widespread the cultural and economic effects are rather than generalising about consumers. Overall, the response covers the task and extends its main ideas, though some support is more convincing than other parts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs contrast benefits and drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the contrary,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, while examples are placed alongside the points they support. There is some flexibility in the linking language, but transitions occasionally feel formulaic, and “Furthermore” is repeated. The sentence beginning “Moreover, as individuals seem to regularly favour imported produce over local dishes” is incomplete, which interrupts the flow between ideas. Aim to connect this clause to the following sentence and use referencing or varied transitions to make relationships clear without relying so heavily on explicit signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied vocabulary for the topic, including “foreign relations,” “cultural identity,” “heritage,” “traditional cuisine,” and “financial loss.” These choices help express the contrast between consumer choice and local consequences. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, but some combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “greater food items,” “negative development of the country,” and “foreign food” could be expressed more idiomatically as “a wider range of foods,” “a negative development for the country,” and “imported food.” “It’s food” also uses the wrong form of the possessive, and “a person is a fond” is not a natural phrase. More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more flexible and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“if a person…”) and clauses showing cause and result (“as it allows them…” and “which helps in repeat purchases”). Meaning is generally clear, and several sentences are controlled. However, some errors remain in sentence construction and agreement. “Moreover, as individuals seem to regularly favour imported produce over local dishes” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; join it to the next sentence or make it independent. In “a person is a fond,” the article and complement pattern are incorrect, while “cuisines… allows” would require subject–verb agreement if “cuisines” is the subject. There are also punctuation issues around sentence boundaries. Check each sentence for a complete main clause and review agreement and article patterns.
