In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowdays, supermarkets in many countires sell food products that comes from all over the world. Although this trend has many disadvantages, such as environmentel damage, i believe it a largely a positive development because it provide consumers to with great choice of access and varitey of food.

One Major adavtage of this is that people can now have different kind of food that they can get from local shop and enjoy it. In past, consumer depend mainly of the seasonal food that they could get from locally.

For example, people in pakistan can get apple from England and dates from Saudi Arab that they cant get locally in the market. This allows consumer to taste different kind of food from abroad while they are in Pakistan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear overall view: despite environmental disadvantages, you consider worldwide food availability “largely a positive development.” You also give a relevant example involving apples from England and dates from Saudi Arabia. However, the response addresses the question only partially: the environmental concern is mentioned but not explained, and the positive argument is limited to variety and access. The example illustrates this point but is not developed with further reasoning or detail. The response also does not meet the required minimum of 250 words, so there is not enough discussion to develop and support the position. To improve, explain both the benefits and drawbacks, make your reasoning explicit, and add a conclusion that reinforces your judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure: an opening paragraph gives your position, followed by a paragraph about food variety and an example. The example is relevant to the point before it, and “For example” helps signal its role. However, the overall progression is limited because the discussion stops after one supporting point; the environmental issue introduced in the opening is not taken up in the body, and there is no concluding paragraph. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly “different kind of food that they can get from local shop,” which makes the intended contrast difficult to follow. Develop separate paragraphs for your main reasons, use clear references to connect claims and examples, and finish by summarising your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “supermarkets,” “seasonal food,” “consumers,” and “environmental damage,” and the reader can generally identify your main point. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the writing less clear, such as “countires,” “varitey,” and “adavtage.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “great choice of access” and “different kind of food” do not express the intended ideas smoothly. Aim to use accurate collocations and a wider range of terms for global food supply, consumer choice, and environmental effects. Proofreading spelling and choosing precise phrases will make your argument easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a complex opening sentence with “Although,” and use a simple example sentence to support your point. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns. For instance, “food products that comes” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “it provide consumers to with” contains an incorrect verb form and sentence construction. In “In past, consumer depend mainly of the seasonal food,” the article, tense, and preposition pattern are inaccurate. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, past-tense forms, articles, and verb patterns, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb before adding more complex structures.
