IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

At present, people prefer to go to the supermarket to purchase food produced in many countries around the world. From my perspective, this is a positive development because it lets people buy whatever they want, even if it isn't produced in their country.

To begin with, I think this is a beneficial approach for the people around the world. It makes people's lives more convenient. They have access to everything they want to consume in everyday life. For instance, some chocolates that I like the most are not produced in my country, but it is available in any mart, and I can easily purchase them to satisfy my cravings. Therefore, this enables us to buy everything no matter where we live.

Furthermore, over the past decade, technology has advanced in every aspect. It has a great impact on everything. It makes trade better and improves the transportation of imports and exports, which may not have been available in the past. By using it, every country exports goods to other countries, allowing people to buy things which they want.

Although it has some negative impacts, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. As far as freshness is concerned, most fruits that are imported from another country do not remain fresh when they reach the particular destination. Therefore, people buy what they get. It may harm a person's health if the fruit has expired and the person consumes it. However, by taking suitable measures, this problem can be solved.

In conclusion, I believe that consuming food that is produced around the world is a positive development. It has many benefits in our everyday life. We can easily buy and consume things no matter thinking about the distance to get it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: access to food from other countries is a positive development, and you maintain this view in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, especially greater consumer choice and convenience, and the chocolate example makes one point personal and concrete. You also acknowledge a drawback involving the freshness of imported fruit and explain that it can be addressed. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the paragraph about technology and trade mainly repeats that people can buy goods, without explaining in detail how this benefits consumers or countries. The freshness concern is also asserted rather than supported with a specific example. Develop each reason with clearer explanation and evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate supporting paragraphs, a concession, and a conclusion. The progression from convenience to international trade and then to a drawback is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help signal this structure. At times, however, cohesion is somewhat mechanical, and connections between claims could be clearer. For example, “By using it” refers vaguely to technology, while “Therefore, people buy what they get” does not clearly explain the preceding point about fruit freshness. The conclusion also repeats the central claim without drawing together the main reasons. Use more precise referencing and make the logical relationship between each example and its point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including relevant terms such as “imports and exports,” “transportation,” “freshness,” and “cravings.” The wording is generally understandable, but several expressions are broad, repetitive, or not quite natural for an academic essay. “Everything” and “things” recur where more precise terms would strengthen your argument, and “any mart” is an informal or unusual way to refer to a supermarket. Some collocations are awkward, such as “improves the transportation of imports and exports” and “thinking about the distance to get it.” Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and natural collocations, while avoiding repeated general words. This would make your ideas sound more controlled and specific.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because it lets people buy whatever they want” and “if the fruit has expired.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and errors rarely obstruct understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. In “some chocolates … are not produced in my country, but it is available,” the pronoun should agree with the plural noun; “most fruits … do not remain fresh” is also followed by the unclear construction “when they reach the particular destination.” The final sentence, “no matter thinking about the distance to get it,” is not grammatically well formed. Review agreement and practise expressing contrast and concession with complete, natural clauses.
