Student answer (Band 5.5)

in today's world, supermarkets of almost all countries offer food produced all over the world to their customers. This development has its pros as well as cons. However, I believe that it is a positive development and that its pros overshadow its cons.

As for its pros, one of main advantages of food from all over the world being available in supermarkets is that people get to taste food produced in a different country without actually visiting the country. Another advantage would be that import and export of food would benifit both the countries involved as well as the producer. Considering these advantages, i believe that making food from all over the world available in supermarkets is a positive development and not a negative development.

As for cons, farmers or producers would want to export the food that they grow instead of selling it in their own country as exporting it would earn them more money. I believe that this is one and only disadvantage of this development and it can be avoided through proper management and by offering good rates to producers for the food that they grow.

As for conclsion, making food from all over the world available in supermarkets has its own advantages like it allows people to taste food grown in other countries without them having to visit the country and that import and export of food benifits both the countries involved as well the producer and it also has its disadvantages like farmers exporting the food that they grow instead of selling it in thier own country to earn better profits. However, its disadvantages can be avoided through proper management and by offering good prices to farmers. Thus, its advantages overshadow its disadvantages and therefore, I believe that it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you consider worldwide supermarket food a positive development because it lets people try foreign foods and supports trade. You also identify a possible drawback—producers may export food rather than sell it locally—and suggest managing this through better prices. These points are relevant, but the response addresses the issue only partially because the benefits and drawback are asserted rather than explained with specific examples or consequences. For instance, explain how access to imported food benefits consumers beyond tasting it, or how exporting could affect local food availability. The claim that trade benefits both countries and producers also needs clarification. Developing these ideas with a concrete example would make your argument more convincing and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, a paragraph on a disadvantage, and a conclusion. The reader can follow your overall position, and phrases such as “As for its pros” and “As for cons” signal the topic of each paragraph. However, progression is limited because the body paragraphs mainly list points without developing links between them. The conclusion repeats much of the introduction and body, while repeated framing such as “As for” and “advantages” makes cohesion mechanical. Some references, including “the country” and “its disadvantages,” could be more precise. Build each paragraph around one main idea, explain it, and use a specific example before moving to the next point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “supermarkets,” “import and export,” “producers,” and “profits.” The meaning is generally understandable, but the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “food from all over the world” and “positive development.” There are also noticeable spelling errors: “benifit,” “conclsion,” and “thier.” Some collocations are awkward, including “good rates to producers” and “food that they grow.” Aim for more precise wording and vary repeated phrases—for example, distinguish imported products from locally grown food. Careful proofreading would also help prevent spelling slips from distracting the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the concession “However, I believe…” and the conditional idea “it can be avoided through proper management.” Most of the message remains understandable, but control is uneven, particularly in longer sentences. For example, the final sentence of the conclusion strings several ideas together, making the structure difficult to follow. There are also errors in capitalisation and sentence punctuation: “in” and “i” should begin with capital letters, and the conclusion would be clearer if divided into shorter sentences. The phrase “as well the producer” also lacks a necessary “as.” Practise building accurate complex sentences, then check each sentence for complete structure and punctuation.
