Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, the popularity of supermarkets in devloping countries has increased significantly allowing consumers to purchase food products all over the world. I believe this is positive development because it provides consumers with greater choice and conevinece, although it can negetivelyy affect local framers and small business.

The main advantage of this development is that consumer can purchase a wide varity of food products a one place at reasonable price, instead of buying various products from different places with different prices. It can save consumer time and money both at same time by going supermarkets. Moreover, imported food all over the world it allowd consumer to enjoy that not available at local shops and stores, such as imported chocolates, furits or foreign specilites. Supermarket also commonly use food safty checks and proper packging to maintain product quality and hygine As a result, consumer can enjoy greater convenience and access to a wider range of food.

However, this development can have negetive consquences for local farmer and small businesses. Larger supermarkets chains often have grater purchasing power and can negotiate lower price with suppliers, making it difficult for small retailers ot compete. In some cases, farmers may receive low prices for thier products, while supermarkets sell them at higher prices after packaging and brading them. For example, a local vegetable seller may lost customers becase people prefer buying packeged vegetable from a large supermarkets. This can reduce the income of small business owners and threaten their livelihoods.

In conclusion, although the growing availability of international food in supermarkets can harm local farmers and small businesses, I believe it is a positive development overall because it offers consumers greater choice, convenience and access to food from around the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you consider worldwide supermarket food a positive development overall, while acknowledging harm to local farmers and small businesses. You address both sides and support them with relevant examples, including imported foods unavailable locally and a vegetable seller losing customers. The conclusion also returns directly to your judgement. This fits a response that covers the task and extends its main ideas. To strengthen the discussion further, explain more precisely how the benefits or harms affect consumers and communities—for instance, qualify the claim that supermarkets offer food at reasonable prices, or show how reduced local sales affect food producers. Some points are asserted broadly rather than fully explored, but the response remains focused and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, one body paragraph develops consumer benefits, another considers disadvantages for local businesses, and the conclusion summarises your position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. To make the flow more polished, improve connections between some sentences and avoid relying mainly on explicit transition words. For example, the shift from food safety checks to the resulting convenience could be linked more directly, and the sentence about farmers receiving low prices could be connected more clearly to the example of the vegetable seller. Overall, the organisation is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “purchasing power,” “suppliers,” “livelihoods,” and “availability,” and you attempt to express ideas about both consumer choice and commercial competition. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, as in “devloping,” “conevinece,” “negetivelyy,” and “brading.” Some combinations are also awkward or imprecise, such as “food products all over the world” and “enjoy that not available at local shops.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations, such as “a wide variety of products” and “food safety standards,” while continuing to use topic-specific terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a concession in the introduction (“although it can…”) and a contrastive clause beginning “while.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Examples include missing or incorrect articles and plurals in “consumer can purchase” and “a wide varity… a one place,” as well as faulty verb forms in “it allowd consumer” and “may lost customers.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: the sentence about food safety checks runs into “As a result” without a full stop. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
