Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are plenty positive and negative features of the supermarkets and its food.

If we look onto positive ones first there are plenty of them from which convinience has a great influence over the public buying everything of the daily use at a same place makes the shopping much easier, having all the wanted stuff at a same place saves the extra travelling, many stores across Japan like Joyfull Honda and Beisia allows you to buy the construction materials and foods drinks at a same place, moreover these supermarkets also provide the better quality and fixed prices compared to local shops, nevertheless, these supermarkets also provide better and premium packaging and imported stuff also which you can easily purchase. Having the daily groceries and daily necessities at a same place is such a great development for a generation who has less time for spending on these. Another point to be noted is that these supermarkets are available and active for a long time from early morning to late nights these supermarkets also give employments to the population and contributes to the development of the country.

As well as the positive features we have some negative ones also like the prices, supermarkets are a little expensive than the shops and small markets and have a tax also included in them which makes the difficulty for the poor ones who cannot afford the expensive stuff and they rather like to go to local markets or small businesses to purchase daily necessities and stuff. Not just that but the food products of the supermarkets use a great volume of chemicals as those are factory processed also the meat in supermarkets is mainly from the animals from dairy farms grown using chemicals and enzymes catalists to fast the growth of animals which can be very dangerous to our health.

As a conclusion i will write the positive features as the major ones and consider the supermarkets as the positive developments while keeping in mind the negative features also. I myself use supermarkets daily and it benefits me in my busy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the question by discussing both benefits and drawbacks, then state that you consider the development positive. Convenience, access to imported products, employment, and possible health concerns are relevant points. However, the response only partly answers the specific issue of food produced around the world: much of the discussion concerns supermarkets generally, such as construction materials, opening hours, and prices. Several claims, particularly about chemicals in supermarket food and meat, are asserted without explanation or evidence. To strengthen the response, keep the focus on global food availability and develop a few relevant reasons—for example, year-round access to seasonal produce or the environmental and economic costs of transporting food—while making your position clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening, a paragraph on advantages, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. This gives the reader a basic route through your ideas. However, progression within the body paragraphs is difficult to follow because many points are joined into very long sentences, and connectors such as “moreover,” “nevertheless,” and “as well as” sometimes link ideas without showing their precise relationship. The advantages paragraph moves from convenience to store examples, quality, packaging, opening hours, and employment with little separation. Use shorter sentences and organise each paragraph around one main idea, supported by explanation or an example. Clearer referencing would also help readers identify what “these” and “them” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “imported stuff,” “local markets,” “daily necessities,” and “development.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “premium packaging” and “factory processed,” but several choices are inaccurate or informal, which limits clarity and precision. Examples include “plenty positive features,” “convinience,” “employments,” and “enzymes catalists”; spelling and word-form errors are noticeable. Phrases such as “the poor ones” and “stuff” are also too informal for an academic essay. Aim for accurate collocations and a more formal register, and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for internationally sourced food would help keep the vocabulary closely tied to the question.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to express several connected ideas and use some complex structures, including clauses introduced by “which” and “who.” However, many sentences are difficult to control, especially the long sentence beginning “If we look onto positive ones first,” where several points are joined without clear sentence boundaries. There are frequent problems with articles, agreement, and sentence construction, as in “at a same place,” “these supermarkets … contributes,” and “the food products … use a great volume.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including the lowercase “i” and missing spaces after commas. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add one subordinate clause at a time; divide long strings of ideas into separate sentences.
