IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

This essay argues about the recent development of buying food directly from the supermarket, and you can buy anything, whether it is produced locally or it is exported. I view this development on a positive note, as it allows people to have lots of heathy option to add on in their menu.

Due to the technological advancemnet, this world seems to be a global village

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You state a clear view that access to food from around the world is positive, and you begin to connect this to greater choice: “it allows people to have lots of healthy option[s]”. However, the response only minimally addresses the question. It does not explain how international food availability benefits consumers, give a relevant example, or consider any consequences; the unfinished point about the world being “a global village” is not developed. The required minimum of 250 words is also not met: the response contains 65 words, leaving the position and supporting ideas largely undeveloped. To improve, write a complete essay with reasons, specific examples, and a conclusion that reinforces your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the topic and gives your position, and the next paragraph begins a supporting point with “Due to…”. This provides a small amount of progression. However, the second paragraph ends abruptly, so the relationship between globalisation and your claim about food choice is not explained. There are no developed supporting paragraphs or conclusion, and the link between the ideas remains unclear. To improve, use a clear sequence—introduction, one or two reason-and-example paragraphs, and conclusion—and connect each point explicitly. For example, explain how global trade leads to more choice before giving a concrete example.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “supermarket”, “produced locally”, “exported”, and “technological”. These choices make the general subject understandable. However, the range is narrow because the response is very short, and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural: “buying food directly from the supermarket” does not clearly express the idea of buying food from different countries, while “add on in their menu” is not a natural collocation. There are also spelling errors in “heathy” and “advancemnet”. Aim for more precise phrases such as “a wider range of imported produce” and “include more variety in their diets”, and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response includes a few different sentence patterns, such as the opening sentence and the clause beginning “as it allows people…”. The main meaning is generally recoverable, and the sentence “Due to the technological… this world seems to be a global village” shows an attempt to use a subordinate opening. However, the range is limited, and some structures are awkward or incomplete. In “whether it is produced locally or it is exported”, the parallel construction is unclear; the second paragraph also does not develop into a complete explanation. The phrase “lots of healthy option” has a number-agreement problem, and the spacing before “on” is inconsistent. Practise complete, clearly linked sentences and check singular/plural forms.
