Student answer (Band 4.5)

In other countries nowadays, consumers can go to the supermarket and buy food produced all over the world. In this essay, I will discuss the positive and negative developments.

Overall, I believe that it's a huge advantage for people because daily essential life products are easily available in one place.

In many countries, people can go to a supermarket and buy food products, daily essentials, and groceries because supermarkets bring products from around the world to one place. Shopping is easy for people. People enjoy shopping for groceries and eating food, and they can find international products easily there: furniture, electronics, clothing, kitchen equipment, cafes—everything in one place; you just want to go there and buy whatever you want.

For example, Sara wants to decorate her home, so Sara went to the supermarket and bought decorative items easily.

On the other hand, supermarkets have disadvantages because in supermarkets a huge amount of products are haram, and often people are attracted there because they sexually portray their products, like hanging bras. People are also attracted to the alcoholic drinks section more because they are easily available there. I think the government should take action on all of these things.

For instance, Ali went to the supermarket and attracted sexual products available around there, like openly hanging bras everywhere and the availability of alcoholic drinks.

In conclusion, I believe that supermarkets have a crucial role and many advantages in every human being's life. People get benefits from there. Supermarkets all over the world are a great positive development in people's life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear overall view that supermarkets are a positive development, and you attempt to consider both advantages and disadvantages. However, the response only minimally addresses the specific question about access to food from around the world: much of the first body paragraph shifts to furniture, electronics, clothing and cafés, while the example about Sara does not explain the benefits of internationally sourced food. The concerns about halal status, sexualised displays and alcohol are also not clearly connected to global food availability. Develop relevant reasons, such as year-round access to varied foods or effects on local producers, and support them with focused examples. The response is 242 words, below the required 250; the 17 words copied from the task prompt are not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable essay shape, with an introduction, a paragraph beginning “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. These markers help signal the intended structure, and the reader can identify your general position. However, progression within the body paragraphs is weak: the first moves from groceries to unrelated household goods and then to a brief decorating example, while the second repeats the same concerns in the Ali example. The opening promises discussion of positive and negative developments, but the conclusion simply restates the positive view without resolving the contrast. Organise each paragraph around one relevant point, explain it in sequence, and use examples that advance rather than repeat the point.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “daily essentials,” “international products,” “alcoholic drinks” and “availability,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on “people,” “products,” “supermarket” and “easily.” Some choices are imprecise or awkward: “daily essential life products” is unclear, and “attracted sexual products” does not express the intended meaning naturally. The use of “haram” is not explained, which may make the point inaccessible to a general reader. Build a more precise range for discussing food imports, consumer choice and local businesses, and check that each phrase conveys your intended idea clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You use mostly simple sentence patterns and make some attempts to link clauses, for example, “because supermarkets bring products from around the world to one place.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. In “Sara wants to decorate her home, so Sara went,” the present and past tenses do not fit together; “people's life” also needs a plural form in this context. The sentence beginning “People enjoy shopping…” becomes a long list joined by a colon and semicolons, making its structure difficult to follow. Practise varying sentence forms while keeping clauses controlled, and check tense consistency, agreement, articles and punctuation when editing.
