IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, people can buy food from different countries in supermarkets. They can easily find fruits, vegetable and other food products from around the world. In my opinion, this is a positive development because it provides more choices and makes different types of food available throughout the year.
Firstly, international food products give consumers more choices. People can try different types of food without travelling to other countries. For example, in India, people can buy apples from other countries, chocolates from Switzerland and pasta from Italy. This allows them to enjoy different tates and learn about other cultures through food.
Secondly, imported food is useful when certain products are not available locally. Some fruits and vegetables grow only in particular climates or seasons. By importing these products, supermarkets can provide them throughout the year. This is especially helpful for people who want to maintain a balanced diet and enjoy a variety of healthy foods.
However, there are some diadvantages to this development. Transporting food over long distances can increase pollution because trucks, ships and aeroplanes uses fuel. Imported products may also be more expensive than locally produced food. Furthermore, if people buy too many imported products, local farmers may face difficulties selling their goods.
Despite these disadvantages, i believe that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Governments and supermarkets should encourage people to buy local products whenever possible while still allowing them to enjoy international food. This would support local farmers and reduces environmental damage.
In conclusion, I consider the availability of food from different countries to be a positive development because it offers greater choice and year- round availability. However, it is important to maintain a balance between imported and locally produced food.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you consider worldwide food availability positive, while acknowledging environmental and economic drawbacks. The response addresses the question directly and supports its view with relevant examples, such as imported apples, Swiss chocolate and Italian pasta, as well as the year-round availability of foods that do not grow locally. The counterargument about pollution and pressure on local farmers adds balance, and your suggestion to maintain a balance between local and imported products follows logically. To develop the response further, explain some points more specifically—for example, how supermarkets or governments could reduce transport-related pollution, or how imports might affect farmers in practice. Overall, the ideas are extended and supported, though a few claims remain general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, separate paragraphs present benefits and drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from consumer choice to year-round availability, then to disadvantages, is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “Despite these disadvantages” help signal the relationships between ideas. This organisation is consistently clear, although the transitions are somewhat formulaic. You could make cohesion more flexible by linking ideas within paragraphs—for instance, explicitly connecting the example of imported produce to the point about seasonal availability. The final recommendation also follows the discussion, but a more explicit link to the pollution and farmer concerns would make the ending feel even more integrated.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for discussing the topic, and phrases such as “balanced diet,” “locally produced food,” “transporting food over long distances,” and “environmental damage” communicate relevant ideas clearly. You also use topic-specific terms, including “imported products” and “local farmers.” However, the range is somewhat repetitive, particularly around “food,” “products,” and “different,” and there are spelling errors such as “tates” and “diadvantages.” Some phrasing could be more precise or natural; for example, “different tates” should be “different tastes,” and “food from different countries” is repeated rather than varied. Broader, accurately controlled vocabulary for sourcing, availability and environmental impact would add flexibility and precision without making the writing sound forced.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because it provides more choices”), a conditional structure (“if people buy too many imported products”), and a concession (“Despite these disadvantages”). Most sentences are clear, and errors do not prevent understanding. Some grammatical slips remain: “fruits, vegetable” needs a plural noun, “aeroplanes uses fuel” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “This would support local farmers and reduces environmental damage” should keep the verb forms parallel (“support … and reduce”). The lowercase “i” is also a punctuation and capitalisation error. To strengthen control, check agreement, plural forms and parallel verbs during proofreading, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
