In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, supermarkets offer variety of food items which are produced locally or imported from other countries.

Consumers buying food from the market has proved to be a good option because if offers them different quality products coming from the best producers. I think it is a positive development and the reason being is that people get to choose items which are not available or food that is not produced in their home country.

Infact, import and export proves to be beneficial for a country's economic growth and for people who prefer trying items from different parts of the world.

On the other hand, is can pose threat to the local farmers as they have to suffer low costs for their items which are exported. This problem could be solved by providing benefits to the farmers by increasing the amounts of locally produced food items.

For example, Pakistan majorly exports fruits like mangoes and crops like cotton. This happens to be a good thing for the importing countries to try and makes items from the raw materials they import. But to not harm the producers, the government should impose laws to increase the prices of these items.

To conclude, going to a supermarket to buy food that is produced all over the world is considered positive as people can enjoy a variety of items and it boosts a country's economy as well. Although the rights of the farmers must be considered so that they could benefit from their production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you consider worldwide food availability positive, mainly because it gives consumers more choice and supports economic activity. You also acknowledge a relevant drawback for local farmers and suggest government support, so the response addresses both sides of the issue. However, the main reasons are only briefly explained. For instance, you mention that people can buy food unavailable in their country, but do not develop how this benefits consumers or provide a specific example. The Pakistan example focuses on exports and raw materials rather than directly illustrating supermarket access to international food. Develop each central point with a clearer explanation and a directly relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from your position to a counterpoint, an example and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “To conclude” signal the direction of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the discussion shifts from imported food to exports, farmers’ costs and government price laws without fully explaining the links. Some connections are also awkward, such as “This happens to be a good thing” after the Pakistan example. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s main point, then connect each example explicitly to your argument. More precise referencing would make the reasoning easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “import and export,” “local farmers,” “economic growth” and “locally produced food items.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “pose threat” and “impose laws.” However, several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “different quality products,” “suffer low costs” and “makes items from the raw materials.” These can make parts of the argument less clear. Spelling and word-form slips such as “Infact” and “is can” also affect presentation. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling; for example, describe farmers as receiving lower prices rather than “suffering low costs.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including a conditional suggestion: “This problem could be solved by providing benefits to the farmers.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors recur in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “Consumers buying food from the market has proved” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the reason being is that” combines structures awkwardly. “On the other hand, is can pose threat” also contains a typing or verb-form error and needs an article before “threat.” Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and simplify constructions when needed. Greater control of these patterns would make your ideas clearer and more reliable.
