IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In most regions nowadays, customers have access to food produced globally at their local markets. I believe, it is a positive development because of global economic boost and variety in availability of products.
Export brings more profits for food companies. Availabilty of local products internationally gives local manufacturers access to broader markets. Moreover, the export sttaus of a corporation pormotes it locally which improves sales in their own country. This synergistic effect will significantly increase revenue for these food manufacturers.
Avaiability of off-season of proudcts in another benefit. Due to supply of local food products to global markets people have access to plants and vegetables beyond their yield season. For example, in Pakistan mango season usually lasts in summer. But due to supply from all over the world, Pakistanis can enjoy mangoes throughout the year.
Another positive development is the avilability of wide range of products to diaspora. For imigrants, getting their local food is the biggest challenge and it can maek them feel homesick. The availability of internal products solves this hurdle. People living abroad can walk in a local supermarket and get food imported from their home country. For instance, India has more than 1 billion nationals and is the biggest sources of migrants all over the world. So, if indian food producers start supplying globally these immigrants can have access to thier home food.
To conclude, the avalabilty of globally produced food prodcuts to the local consumer is a positive development because it helps boost the local economy, access to off-season foods and supplying of local products to international diaspora.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you consider worldwide food availability positive. You give three relevant reasons—greater export revenue, access to seasonal foods, and familiar products for migrants—and the Pakistan mango example helps illustrate the second point. This addresses the task and shows some development beyond simply listing benefits. However, the economic argument is asserted rather than fully explained, and the diaspora point relies on a broad claim about India and migrants without a specific example of how imports benefit them. The conclusion repeats the reasons but does not draw them together. To strengthen the response further, explain the cause-and-effect behind each benefit and support the less-developed points with precise examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, three body paragraphs organised around separate benefits, and a conclusion. Topic sentences such as “Export brings more profits” and “Another positive development” make the progression easy to follow. Linking expressions including “Moreover,” “For example,” and “To conclude” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical, and the economic paragraph moves from international access to local promotion and then revenue without making each link fully explicit. The final paragraph also repeats the body points rather than synthesising them. Use clearer referencing and more varied transitions, and make the logical steps within each paragraph explicit so the reader can follow how each example supports the main claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “export,” “broader markets,” “off-season,” “diaspora,” and “homesick.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some phrases show an attempt to use more precise language. However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “Availabilty,” “sttaus,” “pormotes,” and “imigrants,” and several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “off-season of products,” “internal products,” and “biggest sources of migrants.” These issues make the writing less natural and occasionally require the reader to infer your intended meaning. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations, for example “seasonal produce” and “food from their home country,” to improve accuracy and fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional “if Indian food producers start supplying globally” and the sentence beginning “Due to supply…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening “I believe, it is” has incorrect punctuation, while “Availability of off-season of products is another benefit” has an unclear grammatical construction. There are also problems with articles and sentence structure in “Export brings more profits for food companies” and “the biggest challenge and it can make them feel homesick.” These errors do not generally prevent communication, but they limit control. Practise building accurate noun phrases and checking sentence boundaries, articles, and punctuation, especially when combining clauses.
