IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is very common thing that is occuring all over the world that supermarkets are filled with food that is produced all over the world. It means that we can purchase items in our nearest superstore that are imported from other countries. You can enjoy items of America while sitting in Pakistan. In many countries where mango trees usually do not grow, can enjoy high quality mangos imported from different countries like Pakistan. This is a major thing in the food chain of our world that if a food is not naturally available in a specific country that country can not have that food. The global trade has changed every thing. Now a food produced in Nepal can be transported to America and vice versa by trading.

If i talk about whether it is good or not,i think that is a positive development. Now i will explain it with reasoning.

Firstly, this has caused a lot of trade around the world.Economies of many countries in the world solely relies on the export of food items.Even the developed countries like America,Uk and Canada would struggle if this food chain is restricted. So, the delivery of food items all over the world ensures that world economy remains in balance. Also this has created opportunities for employment all over the world in the form of trade and other operations and logistics related fields. This has also allowed us to taste food from all over the world,so this has also created pleasure in our society. One more thing, there are some items that are required for medical uses but these are not naturally present in the country so importing it from other countries is a good idea.Although, few critics says that we should promote local industry but this idea does not really require to distrupt the food chain of world. There are also other ways to do so.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider worldwide access to food a positive development, and you give relevant reasons, including international trade, employment, consumer choice and access to foods needed for medical purposes. The examples of mangoes being imported and food moving between Nepal and America help illustrate the topic. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For instance, the claim that food trade keeps the world economy “in balance” needs a clearer explanation, and the medical-use point is introduced without a specific example. You briefly acknowledge the argument for supporting local industry, but do not explain its possible benefits before dismissing it. Develop and support these ideas more fully to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall progression: it introduces global food availability, states a positive view, and then presents supporting reasons. Paragraphing also separates the introduction from the main argument. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Also,” and “Although” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the first paragraph contains several points in quick succession, and the main paragraph reads partly like a list, with repeated “also” and “this has.” The final sentence about local industry is not fully connected to the preceding reasons, and the essay ends without a concluding summary. Group related reasons into a clearer sequence, use referencing more precisely, and add a brief conclusion to strengthen the overall flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “global trade,” “export,” “employment,” “logistics,” and “importing,” which allows you to discuss economic and practical effects. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “food chain,” although this is not the most precise term for international food distribution. Some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “a lot of trade,” “this has,” and “a good idea” recur or remain general. Spelling and word-form errors, including “occurring,” “mangos,” and “disrupt,” also affect the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated phrases, while checking spelling and choosing terms that match the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if a food is not naturally available … that country cannot have that food” and a concession beginning “Although.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include the missing subject in “where mango trees usually do not grow, can enjoy,” the agreement error in “Economies … relies,” and “few critics says.” Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “It is very common thing” and the run-on spacing between sentences. Use a wider range of structures with more consistent control, and proofread for subjects, verb agreement, articles, capitalization and punctuation.
