IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
These days consumers can purchase food produced any where in the world from general store. In my opinion, this is a very positive development as it will provide convenience to the users and also help them save money.
Firstly, the main advantage of this setting is the ease of availability of all the every day items under one shed. People will not have to visit different shops for buying food instead they can get all of it in one store. If this step was not taken then they have to commute to different markets and buy each item separately which will be a tiring task every time they want to buy some food. For Example, in our city there is no supermarket which contain various food items. So, we have to go to various shops to find the required item, wasting our time and energy.
Moreover, these supermarkets often have discount available on certain items or on a particular shopping limit like if you shop upto 2000 dollars you will get upto 15% discount. Thus a person can not only find variety of food in these supermarkets but also can save some money. Like Costco, which offers several affordable items upon purchasing its membership. Also, presence of different food items in one place save fuel cost that will otherwise wasted if we have to travel to distinct stores.
In conclusion, I think that gathering of food from all over the world under one roof not only provides convenience to users but also saves their money. So this development has very positive impact on the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you consider worldwide food availability positive because it offers convenience and can reduce costs. Both reasons are relevant, and the examples of travelling between shops in your city and Costco help illustrate them. However, the response focuses mainly on the benefits of supermarkets in general, rather than fully exploring the significance of being able to buy food produced around the world. The cost-saving point is also asserted more than explained, and the discount example is hypothetical. To develop the response further, explain how access to international products benefits consumers—for example, through greater choice or year-round availability—and support each main point with a specific, clearly explained example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the examples are placed alongside the points they support. Some connections are less smooth, however. The second body paragraph moves from discounts to Costco membership and then fuel costs without fully explaining how each point relates to the central claim. The phrase “Like Costco” also begins a fragment rather than a complete supporting sentence. Improve cohesion by linking each example explicitly to its main idea and using clearer references between sentences, rather than relying mainly on signposting words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including relevant terms such as “convenience,” “discount,” “variety,” and “fuel cost.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “shopping limit” and “affordable items.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “under one shed” does not convey the intended meaning, “setting” is vague for this context, and “distinct stores” is an awkward way to refer to different shops. Spelling and word-form issues such as “any where,” “every day items,” and “upto” also reduce accuracy. Build precision by learning common collocations for shopping and food access, and check compound words and spelling during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If this step was not taken then they have to commute” and a relative clause in “which offers several affordable items.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “all the every day items” has faulty determiner use, “there is no supermarket which contain” has subject–verb disagreement, and “presence … save fuel cost” has agreement and number problems. The conditional sentence also shifts awkwardly between past and present forms. Review agreement, articles, plurals, and consistent verb forms, then proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
