Student answer (Band 5.0)

In a lot of countries individuals tend to walk into a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world this can have a major impact on the countries development.

I would argue that giving the consumer the choice to buy food from other countries can have a negative impact on the economy of the country. Many people believe that the economies growth will reduce since all the cosumers don't support locally.

For example, when the

consumer has the choice to buy grapes from other countries, some cosumers will prefer buying grapes from other countries rather than to support locally. As a result of this the farmers from South Africa will produce less grapes, because there isn't a market for it since people prefer buying imported grapes. This will have an impact on the work force since the farmer will have to let go of aome of the workers. Grapes use a lot of people during harvesting time and without a market the farmers won't produce a lot of grapes and therefore the demand for workers will decline. The individuals won't get money and their families will staff of hunger.

Secondly i strongly feel that good competition never hurt anyone. When there a food from other countries, the producer knows that they must deliver the best product possibly. This helps that the bets product are on the shelves in the supermarkets and this ensures food of good quality.

To be honest i feel that this is a negative development expecially in South Africa. The farmers need every single cent they can get to ensure survival of their farms. Secondly the people need work to survive. Therefore i feel there musn't be a choice of imported goods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear negative position, especially in the conclusion, and support it with a relevant example about imported grapes reducing demand for South African farmers and workers. This shows an attempt to explain consequences rather than simply state an opinion. However, the response addresses the task only partially: the economic harm to local producers is developed at length, while the point that competition can improve product quality is introduced but not explained or reconciled with your overall negative view. The claim that families will “staff of hunger” is also unclear and needs a more precise explanation. Develop both sides of your reasoning and make the link between examples and your final judgement clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, an example, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “For example,” “As a result,” and “Secondly” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: the paragraph beginning “Secondly” presents a benefit of imported food, but the essay does not explain how this fits the negative position. Several ideas are repeated, particularly the effects on farmers and workers, and some links between sentences are difficult to follow. For example, the move from reduced grape production to families going hungry needs clearer explanation. Use each paragraph to develop one distinct point and make references and transitions more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “consumer,” “locally,” “competition,” “producer,” “harvesting,” and “demand for workers,” which helps communicate the main argument. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “people,” “farmers,” and “other countries.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “cosumers,” “bets product,” and “staff of hunger,” which can make meaning unclear. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “support locally” and “the economies growth.” Build a wider set of accurate phrases for discussing imports, local businesses, employment, and consumer choice, and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “because,” “since,” and “therefore.” These attempts allow you to explain how imported grapes might affect farmers and employment. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to read. For example, “when there a food from other countries” is missing a verb, while “the economies growth will reduce” has an incorrect grammatical construction. There are also problems with agreement and sentence boundaries, as in the opening sentence, which joins two complete ideas without suitable punctuation. Practise accurate clause construction, subject–verb agreement, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a complete verb and clear structure.
