In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Majority of the countries' supermarkets sell food that comes from all around the globe for their customers. In my opinion this is a postive step as the need to consume something which is not readily available in your country can be imported at ease without the need for travelling and this will eventually make the relations stable between the countries and there will be less shortages for goods.

Due to availability of goods from all around the world help the consumer to select from a variety options, doing so, customer gets the flexibility to switch between multiple options. Almost no country can produce all type of food items for their citizens and even though if the countries somehow produce everything in-house, the quality and consumers would get affected. For example, supermarkets in Pakistan that have coffee beans produced locally would get out-sold by a supermarket that provides their customers with importez Brazillian coffee beans.

By having food from across the globe will help the economy to be stabled. As the overall demand for scarced food will not overburden the labour who works in that farm. Imported food also help consumers to buy food which is not available in a particular season in your country. For example, a non-agricultural and dry country like in the MiddleEast would survive mainly through import of food items. And country like Pakistan, which is agriculturally blessed would benefit by exporting the food items which other countries which will improve the state of their economy and make international relations better.

In conclusion, I highly believe that food from all over the world be readily available at a supermarket's shelf has a positive impact as customers are not bound to just use the locally produced foods but could explore options with ease.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you consider worldwide supermarket food a positive development. You address relevant benefits, including consumer choice, access to seasonal or unavailable foods, and trade between countries, and the Pakistan and Middle East examples help make the discussion concrete. This meets the task well, while some ideas are less fully explained than others. For instance, the claim that imports make international relations more stable is repeated but the mechanism is not clearly demonstrated; the point about reducing pressure on farm workers is also difficult to follow. To strengthen the response further, explain these links precisely and develop each main benefit with a clear cause-and-effect explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present benefits, and a conclusion restates your position. The ideas are generally relevant and grouped by topic, so the overall progression is understandable. However, some links between sentences are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Due to availability of goods … help the consumer” does not form a clear connection, and “By having food from across the globe will help” begins the next paragraph with a confusing structure. The repeated references to international relations also make the progression feel less distinct. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports; vary linking phrases rather than relying on repeated “also” and “for example.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “readily available,” “flexibility,” “import,” “agriculturally blessed,” and “international relations.” These choices help communicate the main argument, and some attempts at more specific vocabulary are evident. However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “postive,” “importez Brazillian,” “scarced food,” and “the economy to be stabled” are examples. Phrases such as “all type of food items” and “a variety options” are also not expressed naturally. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would make your economic and trade-related points clearer without changing the substance of your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “as” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect clarity. For example, “Due to availability of goods … help the consumer” lacks a clear grammatical subject, while “By having food from across the globe will help” uses an incomplete introductory structure. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and agreement, as in “a variety options,” “all type of food items,” and “Imported food also help consumers.” Work on building complete sentences with an explicit subject and a correctly matched verb, and check article and plural forms. This will make your complex ideas easier to follow.
