Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is becoming increasingly common in many countries that people just go to grocery stores and purchase food which is manufactured all over the world. In my opinion, it is a positive development as customers have a variety of food choices and it is very good for the economics of the country.

The primanry reson why I consider this a positive development is variety of food choices. Supermarkets offer a huge range of food products according to the need of the customers. It is very convenient for the people as they buy different groceries under one roof by saving their most of the time. Customers can purchase products which are imported from the other countries and highly valuable. In Paistan, supermarkets offer a wide range of imported products including cereals, chocolates and bewerages which are highly demanded by the consumers.

Another benefit of international food trade is that it can support economic growth. By exporting food products worldwide, countries can generate revenue which governments can spend on the agricultural development and improves the living of the farmers. Government can spend more money on agricultural facilities which will be beneficial for their economics in the future. For instance, Pakistan imports rice in many countries throughout the world which generates foreign income and support local agricultural businesses.

To conclude, I think supermarkets are a positive development as they provide many benefits such as variety of foods and economic support for the country which are advatageous to a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider worldwide food availability positive because it offers choice and can support the economy. Both reasons are relevant, and the examples about imported products in Pakistan and rice exports help connect the discussion to a real context. However, the economic explanation is not fully clear: the paragraph shifts from exporting food to Pakistan importing rice, so the example does not clearly support the claim about export revenue. The benefits are also asserted more than explored, and the response does not consider any possible drawback. The response is 4 words below the required minimum. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and a directly relevant example to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “Another benefit” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. Some links between ideas are less secure, however. In the economic paragraph, the move from exporting food to the claim that Pakistan imports rice is confusing, and the relationship between government spending and farmers’ living conditions could be explained more explicitly. There is also some repetition of “positive development” and “benefits.” Use clearer referencing and make each example follow directly from the point it is meant to support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “imported products,” “agricultural development,” “generate revenue,” and “foreign income.” These choices show an attempt to discuss food trade and its economic effects rather than relying only on basic terms. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations reduce accuracy, including “primanry reson,” “bew erages,” “highly valuable,” and “support local agricultural businesses” in the context of the rice example. “Economics of the country” is also less natural than a phrase referring to the national economy. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise collocations, especially when describing trade and its effects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “It is very convenient for the people as they buy different groceries under one roof,” so there is some variety in sentence form. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction occur. For example, “which governments can spend on the agricultural development and improves the living of the farmers” does not maintain a consistent grammatical structure; “which generates foreign income and support local agricultural businesses” also has a subject–verb agreement problem. The phrase “by saving their most of the time” shows difficulty with the structure of the clause. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building parallel, complete clauses, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
